Tassie Trip 2015
Day 17
Cradle Mountain - Tazmazia - Promised Land (Lower Crackpot) - Sheffield - Devenport.
Today was our last day in Tassie sadly. We awoke to what would be another cracking day - expected to get into the 20's even! Heatwave stuff!
We slowly packed up today as we only had 135ks to travel to Devenport and the boat back to the mainland. It's funny how Tasmanians refer to us a mainlanders or 'you're from the mainland! Serious complex I think.
We left the beautiful Cradle Mountain just before 10am and head towards the town of Sheffield. Our plan today was to have a late breakkie, a big lunch and then something light on the boat.
On the way we decided to stop at a town called Promised Land. The major attraction was a place called Tazmazia which was at one point the largest series of mazes in the world. There are 8 mazes in total. 1 massive hedged maze that covers most of the grounds and within there are a series of little mazes like the Irish maze and the confusion maze and the cage. Once you navigated those you would end up in other little areas including the township of Lower Crackpot. This 5th size of real buildings is pretty impressive. One village is based on Hampden Court in the UK. They even have world embassies located in the grounds and their own Post Office and Lavender fields. It's a place you could easily spend a whole day lost in!
We managed to navigate our way out of the mazes and headed on into Sheffield which is a lovely country style town. We found the Sheffield Hotel and a sensational pub counter meal selection and knew instantly this was the place for lunch. We feasted and beered and afterward spent a good deal of time wandering through the Emporium next door which was an eclectic collection of everything from Top Hats to Piano Accordians, typewriters to records. You name it and this place had it! We all wanted something there! Wandering through the town of murals which are all over the town we looked at the World of Marbles and the country styled general outfitters shop. It was a great little country town.
By this time it was after 3pm and so we needed to continue on into Devenport. We hit the beach next to the surf club to wait out about an hour before we needed to check in to the boat.
Having checked in and boarded, we say and relaxed with some local cheese and crackers and Moo Brew Pilsners and Tassie Pino Grigio waiting for the boat to leave. The swell was expected to be very calm at 1m and about an hour after we departed we got a magnificent sunset in the west. Our last for our Tassie trip - and they were few and far between.
We disembark at about 6.30 tomorrow and have decided to head to Bright for a look around before free camping somewhere near the border.
