Day 51
Victoria River - Katherine
"Flame flickers a soft light
Born from the midnight
Strokes solely to her side
Secrets sworn consumer tide....."
Great sunset tonight - we shared it with some of the locals as you can tell from the pic. The iPhone didn't do any justice though to the dappled colours coming through the trees behind or in the sky though.
We left Victoria River at 8 this morning to head into Katherine and our rendezvous point. The Victoria Highway isn't the best road and I'm glad that Julia is spending some cash to fix it up! Rather than resurface or fill it in though they are just building a whole new road next to the current one !
We hit Katherine just after 10 and drove straight to the Hot Springs which was our meeting point. The constant 32 degree water temp is very appealing at any time of the day and there is lots of shade from the heat too. Katherine Springs also have a large pool as well as the narrower channel so the kids always have fun in any of the spring offerings.
We met up with Phillip and Dianne at about midday - kids happy to see their Grandparents and download lots of stories of their travels to date!
From the Springs we checked onto the Low Level park so that we could plan the next few days ahead. Katherine hasn't changed in 2 years - its exactly as I remember it. Walking into Woolies you are greeted with screaming Aboriginies either pushing prams or pushing each other! It could have been the same time 2 years ago. Everyone shops on a Friday arvo too so the queues were shocking! Add the 33 degree heat and I was glad to get back to the park and dive into the pool!!
I get to give the van a hose and wash down tomorrow too before we head off - its as dirty as the Disco was so will be good to get all the Pilbarra and Kimberley fog off it!
We are heading for Edith Falls and Douglas Daly ( where the hot and cold rivers meet) tomorrow.
