Sunday turned out to be a bit of a scorcher! I was stupidly caught out by the air conditioning and tinted windows of Trump Tower and left the hotel wearing a hooded jumper rather than sun screen (at least the hood came in handed). To escape the sun Ailsa and I jumped into the Fashion Mall directly across from the hotel. I thought we'd just be using it as an air conditioned short cut to the strip, but it turned out shops are something that interests Ailsa (everyday's a school day). To be fair though we didn't spend long browsing before our combined desire to get lunch outweighed that of finding a good purchase. We found a Japanese restaurant in the Fashion Mall and enjoyed their sushi, spring rolls and teriyaki beef in a nearly deserted restaurant. The lack of customers certainly wasn't a reflection on the food which was absolutely terrific. Maybe it was just a reflection on Las Vegas on a Sunday. Saturday night may have taken its toll on passing trade at midday.
After lunch we heard word that the Muirheads were finished lounging by the pool and, with the Laverty's still posted missing following the all-nighter+Grand-Canyon-Tour, we went to meet them at Caesars Palace ... which was no mean feat! Yes, we were both at Caesars Palace. Yes, we were both stood by the fountain in front of the hotel. No, we didn't realise the front of the hotel encompasses several expansive fountains. After lots of arm waving on mobile phones we tracked each other down and went inside to cool off with a Vegas style ice-water cocktail. I'm not sure what kind of alcohol was in it, but it was definitely purple.
We all had a quick wander of the casino floor and then headed towards the shopping area. The whole area was cleverly designed so that, when Steve phoned asking to meet up, it took us a further 40+ minutes to get out of the shopping mall and back onto the strip. If we'd wanted to find our way back into the casino, or to more shops, well that would be easy! But outside? No chance. Even when we could see the exit it was still a bit of a trial to find out how to get to it. Still, we got to see grand statues, multiple fountains, an art gallery and a very impressive fish tank.
Next on the list to see was the Venetian. Unfortunately it was sighted next to Sephora so Thomas and I lost contact (physically and mentally) with Hannah and Ailsa for a good hour or so. It just looked like any old Boots to me. Shopping adoration done we headed into the Venetian mainly to find a good Italian restaurant for dinner that night, but also to gawp at the cobbled streets, gondola rides and fake sky ceiling. We reserved a table in a restaurant for dinner and enjoyed a bit of talent show level Italian opera in a main square before we all went our separate ways back to our hotels to get ready for that evening. I phoned to see what Matt was doing, but he was busy seeing off some of his other (better?) friends to the airport and would catch up with us later.
The Italian restraurant was truly authentic: the majority of the waiting staff were particularly rude, had no time for us, and clearly wanted to be anywhere but here. The food was fine, except for Pamelas who seemed to have been served a soup bowl of green pesto. If you'd asked me half an hour later what I'd had to eat I couldn't tell you, but it was fine.
We met up with Matt at the Mirage for the main event of the day: Cirque de Soleil's 'Love' - the show inspired by all things Beatles. The show itself was mangificent with Beatles silouhettes interacting on huge canvases, psychadelia everywhere, remixed Beatles hits, six speakers on every seat in the auditorium ... and that's all before we even mention the performers! Much of the show was interpretive dance and I lost the thread/meaning on a few ocasions, but the highlight for me was some of the jaw dropping acrobatics which included daredevil rollerskating, precise trampolining and lots of hanging from the rafter type tricks on ropes.
Even considering not all of the group are huge Beatles fans, everyone went home very happy to have seen such an extravagent show in Las Vegas. Well, I say went home, but I believe the Laverty party gave a fair crack at another all-nighter in the casinos. Mine and Ailsa's night ended with us trying to work out how to fit a nearly three week holiday into two cases.
