San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Pk, 15500, San Pasqual Valley Rd, San Pasqual, Escondido, San Diego, California, California
Did you know that for every foot of giraffe, it's tongue is that long in inches? Yes, we went to San Diego Zoo. The place is absolutely enormous! Spread across multiple levels and an absurd amount of hectares, it took constant reference to the zoo map to find our way from tiger to panda to koala and back to refreshments. In all, it was a bit of a rush around and three days would probably be required to do the centre justice. There was lots of information about each animal's endangered rating and the conservation aims of the zoo ... but we mostly dashed from one area to another spotting chimps and polar bears, flamingos and, of course, giraffes (my personal favourite). It took a cable car ride to get our poor wee feet from the far end of the park back to the main entrance.
After the zoo we headed into the heart of San Diego: The Gaslamp district - lots of shopping, restaurants and bars within a short walk. After a short time in an open air mall (works far better in San Diego than The Fort in Easterhouse) we stopped into a restaurant called Blue Point, which was proclaiming itself to be one of the best seafood places in the area. It was all very posh and Ailsa was surprised I made it past the door greeter with my t-shirt, trainers and shorts. One of their 'specials' was a seared salmon steak with BBQ glaze. What's that?! Salmon and BBQ sauce? That can't possible be right! But they claimed to be seafood experts so I trusted their guidance. Turns out I should have gone with instinct (and common sense) on this occasion. That said, Ailsa lucked out on all three courses, my starter and dessert were terrific ... but I heartily recommend eating salmon as it comes. No need for sugary American glazes!
Never mind, nothing a Hard Rock cocktail couldn't fix! After sampling their Amaretto Sour Whiskey and local bourbons I was graciously chauffeur driven home to rest my poor wee feet after a long day of hard graft.
