Glen Innes, NSW
After Coonabarabran our next stop was Tamworth for an overnight stay en-route to the Australian Celtic Festival in Glen Innes. In Tamworth we visited the "Walk a Country Mile" interpretive centre exhibiting the history of Australian country music.Unfortunately we then had problems with our car alarm and immobilizer so spent the afternoon with a visit from the NRMA and a new battery installation!
We stayed a week in Glen Innes which allowed us time to enjoy the Celtic festivities in this lovely New England town including the street parade, highland pipe bands, Irish dancing and some great Celtic music from local bands. We also visited the Australian Standing Stones which comprise of 40 granite monoliths and have a circle of 24 stones representing the 24 hours of the day, three central stones, four cardinal stones marking north, south east & west, and seven stones marking summer and winter solstices, the longest & shortest days of the year.
The area around Glen Innes had a great Celtic feel about it with places named Dundee, Stonehenge, Glencoe and Ben Lomond. The temperatures during our stay reached a sunny 19C during the day and dropped to around 5-6C at night, but luckily we had our trusty Vietnamese copy "North Face" jackets to keep us nice and warm.
