It's been go go go since i met with the group on Friday night so i treated myself to a rest day today. I have been up at 6.30 every day, 5 yesterday so it was such a nice treat to read in bed this morning until 9. I am on holiday after all! Our group is young and lively with some real characters! We set off at 6 on Saturday morning for a 6 hour bus ride to Rio Dulce on the north east side of Guatemala. Our bus was definitely the lively one , we never seemed to stop between chatting and singing so the trip flew! You thought i was loud, i have certainly met my match with some of the Aussies but it's all in good spirits. Saturday afternoon we chilled in out lake side cabins. It all had a slight feel of Love island, but of course it wasn't an island and we are not celebrities!Sunday morning we headed off early again meandering up the estuary to a town on the carribean coast called livingtson. As you will see from the photo's, I took a shining to the water flowers, I am trying to bring out some out creativity from this logical mind so apologises in advance for all the flower photos!I hope the photos capture how unusual it all felt. Tropical meets water and not a soul around besides a few local kids. Livingston was alot poorer than we expected. The guidebooks had made it out to seem quite touristy but we faded in with locals strolling around on a sunday morning. Had a great coconut fish soup!
Another 4 hour bus trip took us to Flores where we stayed Sunday evening. It's hard to capture the feeling of the bus trips.. We're a noisy bunch so it goes from lots of chat and music to nap time, bodies and bags of food everywhere. Mel appears as the mother of us all making sure everyone is eating enough and sharing out some early purchases made from another toilet stop! After a mini pool party sunday night (in bed for 10.30) we were up at 5 yesterday moring to go visit Tikal, an ancient Mayan settlement. It covers a vast area of the Petan region and it is quite a sight. 6 Massive temples towering into the sky in the midst of the jungle surrounded by hundreds of buildings still undiscovered. We appreciated getting there early afterwards as it was quite special seeing it without too many other tourists around. It kind of felt like we were discovering it for the first time, although of course we weren't!After some scary hikes up dodgy ladders we got some great photo's.
Another bus journey yesterday afternoon and some serious nap time we crossed over the border into Belize. Tomorow we head for Caye Caulker, some beautiful islands off the coast.
Someone did suggest the other day that we set up a diary room... I think it's too early for Mutany yet although i do think i have a person in mind who i would vote off the bus!! Day 4 on the big brother bus tour continues.
