Ok, so final full day in stockholm, im trying to remember what we did, but that was friday and its now monday and when travelling all the days merge into one so it feels like so long ago!!!!!
We caught the bus to a viewing tower which was quite a way of the centre to the east and went up to floor 30 to get the views. This was inside with a cafe, and as it was quite a sunny day reflection on the glass was really high so couldnt get any good pictures. Floor 31 was an outside viewing platform, a bit like the empire state building, so we went up there but that high up it was freezing so didnt stay there too long! After that we headed back into the centre and to Gunnar Asplunds Town Library. We had heard great things from the Canadian that was in our room but when we got there it wasnt as magnificent inside as we had expected, so again didnt stay for long. We made our first picnic from our rations of cheese, ham, bread, crisps and salami which considering it was just all thrown together was actually quite tasty!!!! We went back to Gamla Stan (the old town) and sampled some MORE hot chocolate!!!! And basically just chilled before heading back to the boat again to rest/play cards/read etc. We had seen a Swedish restaurant that looked good on Gamla Stan so we headed back there for dinner and we weren´t disappointed! It was amazing....think Ikea meals ten times nicer!! (and i like ikea food). Obviously I went for Swedish meatballs....absolutely delish! There was some berry stuff on the plate too, cant quite remember the name but also really nice. Sam and Karl had elk (moose) stew which i tried, so I can officially say I have now eaten moose!!!!!
Saturday - We packed up our stuff and put our luggage in the store then decided to take a walk up the hill behind our hostel, it went into a really nice area of Stockholm that is South of the mainland and the old town, Gamla Stan, which is an island. Its an artisan area really and I saw loads of small galleries and art shops, so I think this is even more reason that I think my Mum and Dad would enjoy this city! (They have already expressed an interest at visiting one day). After wandering for a while through the hilly cobbled streets we decided it might be a good idea to walk down the coast a bit to see where we needed to get on the ferry later that day. After walking for ages I announced that there was no way I could walk that distance with 18kg on my bag so we turned back and looked into bus options. After that, another trip onto Gamla Stan, where we grabbed lunch in the same cafe as we had hot chocolate the day before. There is this thing in sweden where at lunchtimes they have ´dagenstrutt´or something like that which literally means todays special. Its a hot meal with salad, bread and a drink and comes to about 100 kroners (10 pounds). Mine was a bit more as I didnt have the conventional tea/coffee (i had hot choc) but still a bargain I think compared to other prices in Sweden!!!!!! After heading back to the boat we made our way to the bus terminal a little way along from the hotel and got on the bus to the ferry. It was checking straight in and straight onto the ferry!!!!!! We found our rooms right at the bottom under the cars and there wasnt even room to swing a cat let alone put 3 massive backpacks!!!!! There were literally 3 beds! We headed to the deck for departure and got some amazing pictures of the Swedish archipelagoes. I was so shattered that I went to bed pretty early bout 9pm....but the boys were in the mood for a party and stayed up.....til 5am! I have heard so many funny stories and seen videos....sounds like they had such a laugh. There was (obviously) an abba tribute band which i have seen a film of, as well as karls dancing (hahah) and heard about a drunken swede, who looked the spitting image of Boris Johnson, who was falling all over the place! We realised after that many Swedish/Finnish use this route as a booze cruise, as alcohol is so heavily taxed in their countries! They obviously made the most of this as Karl and Sam said that by the early hours everybody was blind drunk!!!!! I got a good 12 hours sleep so got up just before 7am finnish time (thats 5am GMT!!!!!) to use the shower in the corridor before it got too busy and then wandered around and got some breakfast on my own. It was still dark and obviously all the drunkards werent up by that point so was really quiet and actually really nice. Went back to find the boys still asleep but they got up soon after and we all napped until the announcement came on that we had almost arrives, so went up onto deck to be welcommed to a very grey rainy Helsinki!
