We left Brisbane at around 1pm and arrived in Byron Bay about 6pm. New South Wales (where Byron Bay is) has daylight saving whereas Queensland doesn't so we were now one hour ahead. We arrived to pouring rain and were greeted by Liz (who we first met in Cairns) who had really kindly sorted out our accommodation whilst we were travelling as everywhere I phoned was fully booked! We waited for a good hour though at the bus stop for the hostel mini-bus to come as we missed the first one not realising where it was picking people up from! Once at the hostel we quickley dropped off our things and headed straight back out to meet Liz for some dinner at....Cheeky Monkeys! This place is notorious! The food is cheap as is the drink (relatively). Once people have eaten and consumed enough alcohol to make it bearable some competitions started. Sam and Liz were plucked from the crowd to take part in a competition called heads or tails. Basically they had to guess which way the coin was going to fall but had to show their choice by touching either the head or the tail of the person next to them. Out of 8 or so people Sam won and his prize was a massage which he never claimed.
Not much after that the real fun began when the dancing on the tables started and we were entertained by a singer who was the epitome of the term 'Essex girl'. It was a laugh, especially after more beers andwe spent the rest of the night dancing on the tables!!!!
Next day I felt a little worse for wear as you could all have probably predicted!!!! We didn't emerge from our rooms until midday and then decided to take a leisurely stroll along the beach (right opposite the hostel) into town. It took about half an hour and by the time we were there we were all craving at least a litre of fluids so having walked around trying to find a cheap place we ended up in Subway!!! After lunch we looked around the shops and Sam and I bought some boomerangs. Mine was just a decorative one but Sam got a returning one. We then wandered around the coastline to a lookout and spent a while watching the surfers which was amazing as there were so many, all waiting for the perfect wave. There were some amazing surfers that made it look so easy I wondered why Sam and Karl found it so hard!!!! After that we took the long walk round to Australia's most eastern point and then the lighthouse. To get there we had to walk along paths which went through trees etc etc and on the way we stumbled across a lizard that was at least a metre long. No joke. Its tongue was flashing in and out of its mouth and at one point i thought it was after us! But it seemed harmless and crawled out of the way - gave us a shock though!!!
Up at the lighthouse we looked out to see and even saw some dolphins!!!! Was amazing but they were moving through the water at such pace that I didn't manage to capture it on camera unfortunately. We headed back to the town via the beach where Sam tried his boomerang to some success(!) and had fish and chips on the seafront before heading back for an early night.
The next day we again took a leisurely walk along the beach into town and had a look around before heading to the beach for a while. I went for some wave jumping in the sea but got a bit freaked out by the mention of jellyfish so soon came out!!! We left the beach and walked back to the hostel and got our things together to get back into town to get some food before boarding the overnight bus to Sydney at around 9pm.
