Claire's Travels
Ok so after dancing the night away we were starting to get a little tired on the boat journey to Uraguay. we managed to grab a little sleep but then headed onto deck to wake ourselves up. It was another beautiful day!
When we arrived, we werent quite sure were exactly the Colonia town was so we got in a taxi...it was literally up the road, but never mind!
Colonia is so pretty, it reminds me of Parati in Brazil. We strolled around the cobbled streets and the harbour which was lovely. At this point it was lunch time so we went to a restaurant along the main street. Once again as we sat down, one of the s from the hostel suddendly appeared...they get everywhere!
I went to get out my camera to take a photo and realised that the camera wasnt in my bag! joy! I hurried back to the port as I thought that I might have put it down there but funnily enough there was no sign of it. The strange thing was that I had no recollection of putting it down anywhere as it was always attached to my wrist. I tried some of the local shops to see if someone had left it in there - no luck. One place I went into said they would contact the police for me...such a friendly place Colonia!
The policeman arrived and asked me to take him to the scene of the crime, so off we went in his police car (we did receive a few stares from the public and one taxi driver actually asked the policeman what we had done!)
Nelson (yes we were on a first name basis with the policeman) told us that he was going to pick up a translator as his english wasnt very good. Unfortunately the only line the translator could form was 'what is your name' - really very helpful in this situation.
So once we were back on the port staring at the bench I might have left it on..I would like to state that this was the 3rd time I had been back to this spot to look for the y camera and suprisingly it still wasnt there!.
So next stop, the naval base. Dont ask me why we were here, translator guy was no help and he had stayed in the car anyway! Nelson took down my details and so did some other guy from the naval base. Then Nelson just left, asking us to stay there. This other guy then appeared, attempted to talk to us and realised that we werent getting anywhere so made a phone call. About 10mins later a woman appeared and once again asked where I thought I had lost it. By this stage it was getting a little repetitive. She explained that this other guy was going to take my details (3rd time lucky!) and place an article in the local paper so if anyone was found it they could get it back for me.
I mean I have to give it to them, they were unbelievably helpful. Though I do get the feeling it was the most exciting thing that had happened in Colonia for a very long time. This clearly wouldnt have happened in England. They simply would have told you that it was just bad luck!
I tried to make a phone call home to let them know what had happened and to get them to contact the insurrance company but no one was in and the answer machine wasnt working! It was turning out to be a great day so far!
We decided just to try and enjoy the rest of the day and go get an ice cream, but suprise suprise they restaurant wasnt seeling ice cream any more! Brilliant!
Considering the 'eventful' day we had it was still really good! Colonia is definately worth a visit!
