Been wandering up and down the Khao San road - a little like bangkok's Blackpool.

Here comes the rain - luckily I'm in my hotel room. Don't think I'll be popping out on to my balconette. Thunder and lighting too. Glad I was out and about early this morning.

Went to wat pho this afternoon. It is the oldest temple in Thailand and has a giant reclining Buddha. Just his smile is 5 meters wide. And there were 108 bowls alongside him - and you have to drop a coin in each one (well, you don't have to - but then you wouldn't be lucky and have a long life). The noise everyone throwing the coins in the metal bowls added to the experience of walking around the massive Buddha. Weather became a bit overcast -but was still hot ...

Went to the grand palace this morning. According to the vast majority of 'helpful' people on the street, the place was closed today; or was having a religious celebration; or was hosting a funeral. They all had alternatives that they could take me to they said. I ignored all of them - and guess what? The grand palace was open. Was quite stunning. Saw lots of ornate buildings and went into the temple of the emerald Buddha. Had to make sure that I didn't show him ...

Arrived at hotel last night. Lovely room with elephant towels and everything - and a private balcony. It's very humid outside, but hasn't been raining. Didn't do anything much last night but sleep. I couldn't sleep on the planes and it took about 24 hours door to door so was pretty tired. Had a good sleep and was up at 8am.
