Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
Today we started by visiting a more lower class home and had tea with a widow named Fatima. That was in a village named risanti. Risanti is an area rich in jurassic fossils and we visited the place where the cut and polish the fossils in to stones. The fossils are very visible in the stone. Then we headed into the desert to our camel ride to meet our 4x4s that will take us to our camp. The camel ride was actually fun and not very hard. We then met our driver Ali who drove us to our camp. The ride starts out as a vast area of crushed stones. Quickly we were in very sandy soil, bumping along to our camp. We arrived at camp and met our camp manager Hussein. For the afternoon we rested as it was extremely hot. Toward evening we climbed a high dune to watch the sunset but were foiled by rain. The next day we visited 2 nomad families who live incredibly simple, basically in a leanto. They walk a half hour to get their water from a well. These people were called the blue men because of their clothing. We also visited a village that was the source if slaves for the slave traders. We heard traditional gnawa music and dance (trance music). On the way back we stopped at wadi to lunch for our fossils and actually found some. We did see the sunset but it was incredibly windy with sand blowing in your eyes. The camp staff performed song and dance for us. The stars were amazing!!! The Sahara is definitely a bucket list item
