Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
Today we walked through the oasis where the villagers farm. We cut alfalfa with one of the villagers. The oasis is divided into plots with many different things growing, alfalfa, pomegranate, olive trees to name just a few. We then walked to a madrassah from the 14th century that is maintained as it was then. Children as young as 4 would go to the madrasah to learn the Koran by heart and eventually become Imams. Today there are no more madrassah. We then walked to the mellah, the Jewish quarter again from the 14th century. Today nomads live there as one of their places. For our day in the life we were given money to purchase the food for our dinner tonight at the food market. After lunch we visited a school and a class's rom of 5th graders. Robert led them in song and they all laughed and enjoyed themselves. We had our dinner in an outdoor Berber tent and listened to indigenous music. The music group was composed of our city guide from today and his relatives. They were great. Last night in tinghir. More adventures tomorrow.
