I took the ferry across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires in Argentina to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. Colonia is a small sleepy town; it is quite pretty with cobbled streets lined by tall trees.
When I arrived in the evening, we went for dinner at the quirky El Drugstore restaurant - it was colourfully decorated, had live music and even had one table outside in an old car!
The next day I went for a relaxing stroll around town - it doesn't take long to see it all! I visited the Iglesia Matriz church which has a modern, minimalist interior. I saw what was left of the old city walls and drawbridge (Puerta de Campo). I climbed the lighthouse and, despite the various and signs and warnings, I was one of the many people that banged their heads on the tiny door (it really hurt!). Next to the lighthouse are the ruins of an old convent.
Spread around the centre of town are various small museums with weird and wonderful collections of artefacts from Colonia's history - one had many very old stuffed animals and collections of insects and butterflies! There were some beautiful items from the colonial period - the high-ranking Spaniards that came here must have had pretty extravagant lifestyles.
I met some of the girls for lunch - I had a yummy flaming crepe suzette at the very pretty El Galette restaurant. We also tried the very sweet local speciality drink - grappa with honey.
