On the drive through Botswana from Ghanzi to Maun I noticed that most of the houses are very small - they don't look bigger than one room. Maun is a reasonably sized town and it has a Nandos where we stopped for lunch. Two local guys started having a fisticuffs outside the front door but the staff were just laughing at it so I wasn't too worried. When we arrived at the campsite I was quite busy - I was on cooking duty (steak, potatoes, butternut squash and carrots) and had to pack up a small bag of stuff for our overnight stay in the Okavango Delta. There was another amazing sunset.
The campsite was lovely, with a swimming pool and bar, but the shower and toilet block had an open roof and so was filled with bugs - they especially swarmed in at night when the lightbulbs were switched on so in the morning the toilet bowls were black - choc-a-block with insects squirming around, even after flushing it they didn't go away. Plus the showers had pools of dead bugs in them, while I was having a shower they would get into my clothes and towel and they would also come and land on me while I was drying myself and getting dressed. While I was washing my teeth I ran the tap to try to stop the insects that were crawling up out of the plughole but they still managed to fight their way up through the water, it was so unpleasant!
When we returned to Maun after the Delta everyone was desperate for a shower but it was a boiling hot day and the water supply was a bit sporadic - there was just enough water to get the dirt off us and luckily the water was back on properly by dinner time.
That afternoon was the first time in over two weeks that we had a few hours of free time off the truck, which was nice because it was starting to feel like a school trip - up until then, every single part of every day was dictated, from when to get up, when and what to eat, what to see and do, even when we could go to the toilet! We were quite far from town and there wasn't anything else within reach of the campsite - luckily the weather was fabulous so everyone just spent the afternoon soaking up the sun with a few beers around the swimming pool - very relaxing
We had chicken satay and noodles for dinner followed by apple and rhubarb crumble and I had my last day of washing up duty - hurrah!
As we were packing up to leave Maun, I found a dead (I hope) scorpion under our tent, right underneath where my head was
