Time flies..
Two nights in McCarthy in the middle of nowhere plus one night in Valdez since last blog entry. Two fabulous days despite rain and cold. The campground in McCarthy had no facilities but bears around, so it was a little scary especially at night. One day always goes to travelling to the place where we are going to stay after which we put up tents and have dinner. The activity in McCarthy I did was glacier walking. It did not seem to be a good day as it was raining all morning when we started. But still off we went and it turned out to be a very special day. By time we got up on the glacier and had all those lovely views it was worth going. But then there was an accident in another group, where a man from Holland slipped down the glacier mountain into the cold water and he probably broke his ancle. There we stood waiting while all guides tried to help him, when the cold wind came in and it started to rain heavily. It was freezing. After an hour standing there we started going back. And after again in tent and changed to dry clothes and having lunch, I felt great again. Just great.
The next day, that is yesterday, Sunday, we moved on to Valdez. Here we have had two delicious dinners by the Oklahoma people, that is Jen, Zac and Chase. Yesterday we also paid for a glacier kayaking for today, $229 - quite a lot of money! But today we woke up in heavy rain, even the tent was wet. Still off we went, seeing nothing from the boat at first, but slightly it cleared up a little and the rain slowed down. I'm lucky we did go, because it was the highlight of this trip so far! We were kayaking in the middle of icebergs. Really, that was what we did. The kayaks were for two and I was with Liam. It was absolutely wonderful. Nothing I could have imagined. I will upload pictures later and you will see also. We also saw sea lions, sea otters, a bold eagle, something like dolphins and some birds.
In Valdez we had showers and washing machines. Tomorrow we will get off by 7 to Seward. That is a long drive, 9 hours in the van. Nice??
Goodnight from Valdez.
