Kuala Lumpur
So Thailand refused our visa extension, so we got a cheap flight to Kuala Lumpur and back to Phuket then we get a 30 day visa.
We where up at silly o'clock today to get to Bangkok airport for our flight to Kuala Lumpur, when we left the weather was OK but by the time we got to the airport it was pouring with rain and blowing a gale, it's the same every time we fly. Nothing very exciting about the flight out but when we got to Kuala Lumpur airport we found a airport staff pass that opens all the doors!! Herman wouldn't let me test it :( We had a couple of books to read so just decided to kill the couple of hours in the airport rather than go out to the city. Which was a stupid idea as our flight was delayed 3 times so in the end we where in the airport for almost 12 hours. Also there is nothing to do at the airport. Absolutely nothing and really crap internet. haauuuuuuughhg
Eventually we arrived in Phuket, it was raining a little bit cold and didn't feel like “Phuket” should. We got a taxi to our hotel passing a car accident on the way, the car was unrecognisable and the passengers had already gone to hospital. But at last we reached our hotel which is amazing. Definitely the nicest hotel we have stayed in so far (apart from maybe the Beijing hotel, which used to be the home of Chinese Royalty) it's really nice and colourful with a emphasis on feng shui and is only 2 minutes to the beach.
Phuket
After our adventure at Kuala Lumper airport we are now chilling in Phuket, I have never seen so many chavs in one place and I've been to Slough!!
Admittedly I am suffering from the flu (!) and feel a bit poorly again, but I really expected more from this world famous island. The beaches where very nice and Herman said the diving was the best he's ever done but I still feel like it hasn't lived up to my expectations.
The hotel staff where really sweet and looked after me while Herman abandoned me for his diving bringing me a breakfast in bed!
There are a lot of really seedy bars with skanky looking women/men sitting outside leering at any man walking past, they would stand in front of the women and grab at the men – they must get some b**** slaps occupationally, and of course there are the he/she bars much scarier as we have heard the stories of them chasing after men that laugh at them and beat the sh*t out of them! There are also a lot of people carrying iguanas and monkeys around as well as the elephant and monkey shows – don't worry my email with photos has already gone off to peta.
We stayed 6 nights and Christina was in bed for 2 days. Patong is maybe not the best place to start in Phuket if you have a really nice image of Phuket. Still the beaches are really nice and the diving is great. While Christina was in bed I hit the beach. Got a really good tan in and the water is very nice and clean. There were also not that many people on the beach and that was nice. I decided to book a scuba diving day and to wow they are pretty expensive to go diving there so I had only one day with 2 dives. On our budget it was expensive but if you are there for a 2 week holiday its not to bad. Prices range from £80 to £110 for 2 dives. Where in Koh Tao you can get 1 dive for £12 and normally do 2 dives per day and more in our budget range.. We got the boat really early in the morning. The diving spot was next to the Phi Phi islands and a good 3 hours by boat. We did get a nice breakfast and lunch on the boat with as much coffee/tea and drinks as we like. The boat is pretty big and comfy. The water was nice and calm and very clear. 3 hours later we got to our dive site next to the Phi Phi Islands and by now I am itching to dive. We geared up and hit the water. There was not that many people diving so we had a very nice small group of people with a huge blue ocean all to ourselves and the diving spot was not crowded. The best way to dive. We did 2 dives around 2 islands and the visibility was amazing. Nice drop offs and small tunnels and loads and loads of fish. The best part for me was seeing the Clownfish. The are so lovely and are not afraid to swim up to your face and try and scare you off. They are also rare and need protecting in there natural habitat of anemone. While I was hovering nearby there home the little clownfish swam up to my mask and tried to scar me off. That was amazing. He was staring at me and I was staring at him, eyeball to eyeball. I did not want to scare them off so I backed up a bit. Its not always the biggest creatures in the ocean that's interesting.
When Christina recovered we had a walk around town and we stumbled into the red lights area of Patong. There are loads of go-go bars, dancing woman/men (not sure) and people trying to get you to go see the ping pong shows!! There are also loads of Irish bars and westerners living there and a lot of the people got to Phuket and Thailand and I quote “not for the history, ruins and beautiful landscapes” What do you think?
To get to Koh Tao we booked a same day mini bus to Don Sak to get the ferry to Koh Tao. Asian country's do not generally know what good customer service is and you have to just relax and take it as it comes. We paid extra to get to Koh Tao with the fast minibus and overnight on the ferry. When the travel agency picked us up they took us to the bus station and said we need to go on the Big Bus. We b****ed about that and I phoned the travel agency saying that we want the minibus we paid for. Ten minutes later the agency phoned the taxi driver to take us somewhere else. We then got a minibus full of boxes and stuff to Don Sak. When we got to Son Sak they said we have to wait for 1 and a half hours to get the next taxi to the ferry so we went for dinner and had a great Pad Thai at a road vendors shop. Two hours later they said the taxi is running late and we just need to wait. Another hour later he said the ferry was cancelled because of bad weather. But then we could not get a taxi to the ferry as we do not know were it is, all we know is its another hour out of town. So he said he will take us to a hotel and we can get the ferry in the morning. The driver/travel agency man was also half cut ie a bit drunk. By now we are fuming and extremely pissed off. We googled the weather later that night at the hotel and there was no bad weather forecast and of course we had to buy internet time, b******s. We asked the people at the hotel and they were also very cadge about the weather and could not give us a answer. I'm afraid we have been screwed AGAIN in Thailand. But hey we are on holiday and not on a schedule we tell ourselves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!........
