Well can you believe how fast its gone but this is the final chapter in our amazing trip around the world in 84 days.
Its been just our luck but it turns out Hollywood only has about 15 days of rain a year and to have a straight 5 days of rain is unheard of yet we managed to get it somehow! But the weather hasn't dampened our spirits nor stopped us from getting out there and seeing what 'La La Land' has to offer.
We arrived from Fiji having gone back in time (across the international date line) so we got here on the morning of the same day we left Fiji which was slightly weird but Steve was happy because he was a little further from 30 years old for a while. We headed straight for the hostel in the centre of Hollywood and immediately made to feel at home by the staff. We got a pretty great room with some cool people sharing with us who were more than happy to give us their tips on what to do and see.
We didn't do much on the first night to be honest, mainly because our body clocks were all over the shop but also because for some reason my bank had decided that my debit card should not work in America as clearly this was fraud in action even though they hadn't bothered to stop it from working ANYWHERE ELSE in the world up to this date?! But we did manage to catch the open mic in the bar which turned out to only be a showcase for the hostel staff who obviously were all aspiring singers, not to bad to be fair either.
Eventually, card problem sorted, we hit the road for Vegas on the second day which was a 4-5hour drive through the mountains and desert into Nevada. As all red blooded men would do in our situation we booked ourselves into Hooters on Tropicana Ave and set about destroying our bank balances on the tables. The beer was free all night which only made looking at the cards that little bit harder. I'm telling you now, Hooters has it sussed! We both managed to spend long enough on the tables to enjoy our time there and I even got to knock over my beer onto the table much to everyone's dismay. We took a walk down the strip which is a must, taking in Ceasars Palace and the Bellagio which were incredible buildings to say the least along with the Flamingo. Before leaving Vegas we were told about a place called 'The Gun Store' which did pretty much what it said on the tin. A wall of all guns from handpistols to rifles to automatics all of which you could choose to have a go on in the range. We opted for the Sniper Rifle and headed in to have a go. We were greeted with a few simple questions from the instructor;
have you ever fired a rifle before?
No.
Have you fired a gun before?
No.
What!? Were are you guys from?
England.
Ahh, that explains it.
This is a brief description of the instructor's complete shock and disbelief that anybody had never shot a gun before. Only in America.
Anyways, we drove back through the mountains through the snow which was a tad odd but fun never the less, back to our hostel where we rested for the next days adventure which would be the Bel Air & Beverly Hills Tour.
The tour was hosted by a great Canadian guy called Jimmy who had taken all things Hollywood and gossip to his heart. Immediatley having stepped off the bus he explained that NOBODY in this area would be seen walking and that we should expect to get a few shouts and horns from passersby which we got promptly. I should also point out that this meant no footpaths either so we also nearly got run over by Bridget in her Porsch (for those who don't know she is 1 of Heff's girlfriends). So walking around we got to see the most expensive house in the area which cost a mere $90 million but consisted of 123 bedrooms, 210 rooms in total and 2 rooms purely dedicated to gift wrapping, obviously there was the obligatory theatre, bowling alley, pools and gym, what else?! All this was owned by 1 woman as well which really drives it home. We got to see Danny Devito's house and even his cat! Plus Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's house and of course the Playboy mansion including its zoo and the Playmates house. We walked past Freddy Mercury's house where he filmed 'I Want To Break Free' and also Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley's homes. What I found most interesting about this tour was how much money was being thrown about by these people. For example one resident decided to donate a park to the area and the only thing he felt was appropriate was a golf course, so right in the middle is a 18 hole golf course tendered daily by staff for all the local residents, not your regular swing set and sandpit hey! We ended the tour with a walk around Rodeo Drive which was pretty cool but extremely expensive. We went to the hotel where they filmed Pretty Woman and stopped by the infamous George Michael toilets.
From the tour we went on to do a bar crawl with the hostel which was a really fun night as this was the first time I have been to the states and been old enough to have a drink, unfortunately no Paris Hilton around that night though. It turns out that when Paris met her Swedish fella, the 'Pizza Boy', he was staying at our hostel but no such luck for the fellas this week.
We spent the last of our time shopping down Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards and Melrose and then booked the hire car again for one last trip down to San Diego where we went to Sea World and caught the Shamu show. Ahh, pure genius I tell you. It doesn't matter how many times you have seen it (twice for me now) it is still amazing what they can do with Killer Whales.
So that's pretty much it folks. We go home soon and then its back to work and the real world. I would just like to say on behalf of Stevo and myself a big thank you to all of those who have visited the site and especially to those who left messages, they were really gratefully received. A really big thanks to those out there who helped us in various ways, be it the people we met along the way who made our trip more memorable or those that just gave us tips and pointed us in the right direction. Most of all thanks to the people at home who sorted a few odds and ends out as we went along causing havoc. We will see you all soon and look forward to it, honestly. Sounds like an award speech doesn't it?!
P.S. Guys we will see you at the Colebrook as usual as this seems only right.
Lots of love to you all
