We eventually got to Phu Quoc, it took about 3 hours on the hydro foil boat which was very quick, so i cant imagine how long it would have taken on a chugging fishing boat. Anyway we got there and it looked very impressive, it was a massive island so there were many resorts to choose from. The guide said the Long beach was the most popular and lively area. there wasnt a back packer area as most of the hotels were posh resorts for honeymooners and such. We found a hotel for $10 a night which was the cheapest we could find which was good considering some of the hotels were charging $50 plus a night for some of them. The room was nice, very big and had a tv which was good, but had no english channels but we were hardly in the room. We only planned to stay here for 2-3 nights as it wasnt the cheapest here as we found out that most of the islands we go on never are as you cant really go anywhere else. The beaches were nice but again there was a lot of litter on some of them which spoilt it again. The first day we were there we hired mopeds and travelled the island as we couldnt do this by foot. We read that there was meant to be some good hot springs in the mountains so we travelled to one of them for about 30 minutes and walked for about another 15 to the springs but they werent anything to write home about as it was dry season and there wasnt much water about so that was a shame, it was really funny though because there was this vietnamese family up there having a picnic and they invited us over offering us food and drinks, it was so funny coz we have never met them before, total strangers asking us to sit down with them and they didnt speak a word of english. The gave us beer, shrimps of the barby water mellon and some whiskey of all drinks, they tried to speak to us but it just wasnt happening but we all laughed at trying to talk, i dabbled in a bit of vietnamese but they all just laughed at me. So we left them and walked back down to our bikes and headed for the south of the island where there were really nice beaches. I forgot to mention that this island was pretty big and was very busy so the traffic was crazy and we were driving on mopeds around the place, and they gave us manual gears which none of us used before and had to learn quickly because there was no automatics on the island, so we picked that up alright but trying to change gear and dodge a chicken is an art form. There is no road rules or traffic lights and we were driving on the right so basically you can do what you want it was a laugh but we had some hairy moments around the place. One of the boys richard lost the key of his moped while driving it so he could start the engine ok but couldnt get in to the seat where his camera was and more importantly to put fuel in as we were coming up to being on the red he couldnt put any fuel in but luckily we got back in time and it run out just before a petrol pump and we got some guy to sort out a new key which the people who owned the bikes wernt happy about. Anyway we found a few nice beaches but they werent as nice as some of the beaches we saw in Thailand bu there was still some hope as we booked to go on a boat trip the next day and we were to visit 4 deserted islands so we could still find the best beaches yet.
