Cologne has been interesting. I got here on the high of a really good day in Brussels and was feeling very optimistic. I knew my hostel was a long trip from the train station so didn't hold out too much hope of meeting anyone or seeing much on the first day, however I didn't expect to meet nobody! The place appears to be geared towards groups of people including more than a few stag do's.
I've walked for literally miles and miles throughout Cologne and have seen pretty much all it has to offer, I think, and yet I've hardly spoken to a soul!
The cathedral is the crown jewel, absolutely breathtaking when you're stood directly beneath it. 516ft tall and a unesco world heritage site, you could stare at it for hours... It takes quite a while just to find where the doorway is to be honest. But they don't like hats. Oh no. However I did climb it... And got some seriously wobbly legs in the process, but it's a must see for anyone coming here.
There's quite a lot of information regarding the bombing during the war so it's interesting to see how the city has rebuilt. There's billboards the size of advertising hoards with images of how the city was flattened during that time. It's all a bit sobering, and possibly a reason why I haven't met anyone that wants to speak to me.
Overall, the experience has been an interesting one, and probably not one that I'd quickly experience again. But it's all part of it and I've seen a lot of things I'd never seen before so I'm thankful for that.
Berlin tomorrow for the best part of a week so let's hope the hostel doesn't let me down quite as much!!
