Wednesday 27 AugustWe have arrived, Jackson Hole is a ski resort and has great shops and bars. Lots to do, water rafting, trail walking, fishing, (PTB would love it). We are staying in a remote cabin on a lake formed by the damming of the Snake river in 1927 when there was a landslide. It killed 6 people in Kelly the nearest town, and destroyed all of the buildings. The cabin is down a dirt track and there are signs warning of bears. In fact when we picked up the keys the owners warned that bears had been rummaging in the bins the day before! And, within an hour of being there, No 2 found a snake! We are so near the lake that swimming everyday is definitely on my list - we'll see how cold & how brave I am.In the evening we went back into town to see the last but one Rodeo of the season. Real, true American Rodeo, barrel racing, bucking bronco, riding the bulls. Oh Me oh My. LM joined in the race to catch the ribbons on 3 calves. I went in the ring with him, but had no idea what was going to happen and let him run off with the other 70 children in the ring. He got run down, fortunately by another kid!Thursday 28 AugustThe river in the area - Snake river is one suitable for "floating" down on - but it seemed too early to organise this ourselves, so after investigating a couple of the rental places, we came away with a canoe strapped to the roof of the car. It was plonked in the lake at the back of the cabin, and with 3 likely oars children - off we set. It was very easy and great fun paddling up and down the lake. The girls did well mastering the stroke and even LM sitting on his own seat looked the part - see the pictures.Friday 29 AugustWildlife count:- Moose, Bison, chipmonks, Bald headed Eagle, Cayote, Mule deer, Elk,Saturday 30 August I'm ambivalent about out horse riding, given that most of my family are horse inclined. My preference is to kick and go. Very much western style, sit back in the saddle and give it a kick. The horses seem to be more obedient and not treated like dolls like they are in the UK. So we got up there for the appointed time of 09:14. No safety checks, no boots, no hat, just instructions on how to make the horse go - pretty much like a truck, this button for go, this for stop, kick here and kick hard. Great. The girls were fine, we had dosed up No 2 on piriton to reduce the allergic reaction and we headed off for 2 hours. The boys stayed behind. We were frightened that LM may bang the horses, so he stayed with CT. Casey was our guide, should have been a train driver. He was from Denver and hadn't sat on a horse until he was 23 and then decided that cowboying was for him. SB kept him busy with comparisons with UK riding and Australia. No 2 was happy as larry, talking to her pony geeing him along. No1 not so happy on a horse called Blizzard who obviously wasn't. I wander when they name them for the tourists whether these horses once took after their names, or it has always been a bit of a joke! The last part of the ride was the highlight walking through 3ft of water in the river rather than going over the bridge. Legs in air which meant taking your foot off the accelerator. LM and Ct were pleased to see us and LM banged the horses anyway.Headed up to a ranch today to take No 1 and 2 on a pony trek. 31 AugustStorms a comin, SB had been told that on Sunday and Monday a storm would be coming through and there would be snow. We were like "no Way" after 104 degrees heat the temperature had just settled to a nice 80 - 89'f. We headed up to Jackson Hole to ride on the chair lift to the top of the mountain opposite the Grand Teton, quite a long way up….. At the top it was like a deserted ski café, a bar with no-one attending, vending machines, and an exhibition about JH. Fantastic views looking across the valley. Just up from the chair lift, was another lift, but this time you came down by sledge, not on snow though. The No 1 & 2 came up with me and SB. There was a queue at the top as the woman was only letting people go down, once the person ahead had reached the bottom. However the rain was coming in and I guess because the breaks work on friction, no-one is allowed down in the wet. As they realised this and the queue was building up - down they sent everyone, one after another. SB went down with No 1 and I went down with No 2. It was great fun - could have gone faster though, waited for No 2 to catch up & then off I went for a bit of speed! LM was waiting at the bottom desparate to get on. He'd worked out how you accelerate and break using the lever in the middle. He didn't make it - and even though we tried the next day, the weather had changed and the rain had come in.
