Hi Everyone
So now we are travelling up through Namibia there is hardly any internet access at all so are fairly behind with updating our blogs.
So we will start with our adventures in Cape town.
Our first full day here we joined a trip through the Vineyards of South Africa. We were collected at half eight by a very hyper tour guide. Our first stop was Parrl where we were shown some of the methods on making wine. Now for the best bit, Six samples were placed in front of us for sampling ( this is nine in the morning ). We went through the whole method of smell it, swish it, taste and spit it. (or drink it in our case). They also made excellant chesses which complemented the wines, but you guessed it, Sal is not a chesse fan so didnt participate.
Straight onto another winery in Franschoek for another tasting and dinner. After lunch we drove onto another winery and then our last stop was Stellonbosch for some champagne tasting. A nice bottle of sparking wine was purchased here before we headed off home. A fantastic region with beautiful scenery and well worth the visit.
The next day didn't go to plan. Couldn't hire the car we wanted or go to Robben Island as tickets need to be booked in advance. So we went to the District Six museum which relates back to the Apartide. A very moving museum. It is hard to make sense of what happened here. Things seem to be getting better but only time will tell. The afternoon time we just chilled on a local beach because we had a shark diving trip booked for the following day.
Today is Thursday and we were picked up at 5.15am. We were drove two hours east out of Cape Town to a place called Gasabbi where everyone goes to see the great whites. After a brief explanation of what was going to happen we all boarded the boat. Once out, they started to chum for the sharks with fish bits. This would hopefully bring them to the boat. Waiting for the sharks when they follwed the trail was large tuna heads under a boy. This would be pulled into the boat to bring the sharks nearer to the cage. Witin a few minutes we saw our first Great white. Chris jumped at the chance of getting his wet suit on and was one of the first in the cage. The water here is freezing and it was a while before the next shark appeared. There are five of you in a cage and you wear a mask. When the shark comes you are told to go down ( and hold your breath ) and the shark swims past or thats the theory. So Chris missed the first couple of chances but third time lucky he was straight down to see the three metre long shark swim straight past. A few more sightings and then time to let someone else in the cage. Sal held back and was a little apprehensive. Although when it was here turn to get in she was excited. She was in the cage with a couple of Ausie girls that we had meet previously on the wine tour. The water was frezzing but didn't have any time to think as eveyone on the boat shouted 'DOWN' as the biggest shark of the day came straight passed her. It managed to grab the bait and bashed its tail into the cage and put up a little fight. Sal and the girls came to the top of the water squealing with what they had just seen. The day continued and by the end we had noted six different sharks. We can here you all saying we are crazy but it was absolutely the best experience ever and would recommend anyone to do it.
