(Lucy) In the photo we are at Lake Tekapo on our 'summer' holiday. It was a little colder than we expected as the snow fell.
We started our trip at the beginning of November. We arrived to a partially rebuilt Christchurch which was interesting. The CBD has a small shopping mall with all of the shops built into brightly painted shipping containers. The next street over was closed off due to the crumbling buildings. It was eerie and strange.
We stayed the night in a jailhouse cell at the hostel in a bunk bed twin which was cool. The following day we visited the Antarctic centre, saw some penguins and experienced an antarctic snowstorm simulation and road a Hagglen snowmobile.
We joined Flying Kiwi, loaded our bikes on the trailer and started out adventure.
Stop 1 - Rangitata, the cycle in nearly killed me, it was 15Ks of up hill and into the wind and Chris told me most of it was downhill!
The following morning we were greeted by snow as we missioned it up to the river. We rafted through grade 5 rapids and saw another group flip in sub zero temperatures. Awesome!
Continuing down along the East Coast we followed the Southern Alps to Lake Tekapo where we treated ourselves to a bed indoors. After leaving the lake we hiked through the snow and saw amazing views of Mt Cook. The glaciers were so blue and we were lucky to arrive on such a clear day.
Continuing down we travelled through picturesque scenery into the Hollyford Valley where we entered Gunn country. Another upgrade from tent to tin hut kept us safely away from the itchy sandfly bites.
Next stop was Milford Sound (actually a "fiord" not a "sound") in Fiordland National park. The mist had settled on the rocky mountains and made the fiord look mysterious and moody. Not content with a day trip down the fiord I decided to go off on my own little adventure. The next day I hopped on an overnight boat trip to Doubtful Sound. It was AMAZING! It's an enormous fiord where we found ourselves feeling like the only people there as we sailed around. We caught crayfish in lobster pots for dinner and I caught 4 fish on the rod. 1 we used as bait an 3 Blue cod. 2 of which we threw back as they weren't big enough to eat but one we had for dinner. Eat your heart out Jamie, i thing you must've gone the pub on all of those fishing trips as you never came back with much ;)
(Chris) I arrived in Queenstown, the adventure capital of the world a day before Lucy. It's like a theme park for adults! About an hour after arriving and pitching the tent i was on a bus to a bridge. Years ago, some crazy guy named AJ Hackett decided it would be a good idea to tie a bit of rope to his feet and jump off this particular bridge towards the rapids below. Bungee Jumping was born on this bridge so i decided to do this one as opposed to the Nevis (a much higher but purpose build bungee). The video will be up shortly. This has to be the biggest adrenaline rush i've experienced. The next day we had some hangliding planned but it was grey and windy so it got called off. Instead we had a mosey around the shops and played some awesome mini-golf. The course had little ski resort where there ball went up the ski lift and down the slops!
Next stop was fox glacier which had all the promise of being the highlight of the trip. Unfortunately the Helihike we had planned didn't go ahead , again due to poor weather but we came up with a pretty decent alternative. We caught a bus to Franz Josef Glacier and relaxed in some hot pools until the bus caught us up! Yesterday we went to Hokatika for a beach camp, Lucy went horse trekking and i stayed in camp and played football with some of the other guys. We cycled to pancake rock which were pretty cool and this morning made out way to Abel Tasman National Park. We were dropped off at the airport and boarded a plane bound for 16,500ft. We took in some of the surrounding scenery before jumping out of the plane with an instructor (and parachute of course) strapped to our back. We are now at "Old Macdonalds farm" and up to date.
