We're now chilling by the magical lake Atitlan in Guatemala. After leaving Caye Caulker we went straight over the border into Guatemala. We were met by stunning scenery and the enchanting ruins of Tikal.
We'd decided to sling up a couple of hammocks and sleep under the stars. After much huffing and puffing Lucy finally got her hammock to stay up and I swear the only thing that kept it there was willpower! The moon was really full and the camp ground illuminated. We were hoping to spot a couple of Jaguars roaming but were unfortunatly left wanting. What an experience though! Chris had never experienced such sub arctic temperatures as when he decided to sleep in his sleeping bag liner. His teeth were chattering so much it woke Lucy up (who'd been nice and cozy in Chris' sleeping bag up until that moment). She promptly dug out her own sleeping bag and we both made it through the night.
After rising with the dawn chorus from a variety of tropical birds we set off into the jungle. The ruins were amazing and the rainforest setting teeming with wildlife. The site was relatively uncrowded and we climbed to the top of the huge pyramids to take in the views.
After Tikal we visited the mountain town of Coban, the gateway to Semuc Champey where the best steak dinner of my life cost a mere 10GBP including wine, amazing!
We unfortunatly did not get to Semuc Champey due to some bad advice from a dodgy tout. Still the 4 hour return bus ride was worth it for the scenery if nothin else! ;)
Last night we arrived at the colonial town of Antigua just for a quick stop. We lucked out by wandering into the cheapest hotel so far which was really close to all the action. The cleanliness left a bit to be desired but a lock on the door, hot shower and double bed was pretty cheap at 3 pounds each!
That brings us to where we are now. We're heading out early tomorrow to shop til we drop at the markets (or til Chris does - Lucy has been trained in these endurances by the shopping queen so will not buckle under the weight of all those bags).
We'll be spending a few more days in another lakeside town so I'm sure more photos and entries will be appearing.
