Sunday 20th March - the Great Ocean Road and Kennett River. Ahh, the Great Ocean Road - miles of beautiful scenery, taking in the coast, rain forests and woodlands. We began in Torquay and followed the road through to Kennett River, where we stayed the night and where we had another animal encounter - koalas! They were in the trees right in our campsite and also hanging in the trees along a road just behind the site. We were lucky enough to see a koala climb down its tree and scamper across the road between where we were standing and Vanny. Koalas are so cute! But they don't look like they should be sitting trees. They always looked very precariously balanced on the branches and we felt like they were going to drop out every time they reached for some leaves. They never did, so I guess they know what they're doing!
Monday 21st March - the Great Ocean Road and Port Campbell. We continued down the Great Ocean Road to Port Campbell. On the way we took in even more koalas, a lighthouse, and the coastal rock formation known as The Twelve Apostles.
Tuesday 22nd March - Port Elliot. After spending the night at Port Campbell we finished the last few remaining kilometres of the Great Ocean Road before heading back inland and onto the motorways. We've rushed through the Road, we could have done with taking another couple of days over it. There are loads of quaint towns to stop in and view points to visit and due to lack of time we've had to be very selective about what we stopped to look at. We've parked up in Port Elliot for the night and tomorrow morning we'll drive to get the ferry over to the island. I think Vanny is excited about going on a ferry!
Wednesday 23rd March - Kangaroo Island. There are wallabies all around our campsite, and they are so cute! They must be very used to tourists as you can get quite close before they skip away. There are also a couple of koalas, including a mother and baby! The baby was so cute, just like a little teddy bear. But there were lots of stupid tourists about taking and, in our opinion, aggrivating the koalas. It was dusk so nearly everyone had put their camera flashes on, blinding the poor koalas.
Thursday 24th March - Kangaroo Island, Flinders Chase National Park and the Remarkable Rocks. We headed to the National Park on the lookout for platypuses and echidnas. Needless to say, we didn't see the famously secretive platypus, but we did get attacked by and echidna! Well, maybe not 'attacked' as such... All the signs around the park say how echidnas are very shy and to talk quietly so you don't disturb them. Well, we were pretty sure we weren't going to see one so we were strolling along the path chatting away quite merrily, being anything other than quiet. Then out of nowhere a huge spiky bush leapt across the path in front of us! Echidnas are huge, we had no idea! We were terrified, but the echidna happily trotted off into the bush taking no notice of us whatsoever.
After this we went to Admiral's Arch, a rock formation by the sea. And all around it were seals lolling about. There were hundreds of them! It was so cool to se them all there, lounging about. Then we went to the nearby Remarkable Rocks. And they really are quite remarkable. They have been eroded into all kinds of weird shapes and you can clamber all over them, which was fun.
Bye!
