We were sold a luxurious private mini bus at Bangkok bus station for a deal, at just 126 baht (less than £2.50). What we travelled in was far from it! Sweaty and cramped were more my kind of thoughts. After two hours with snoring ladyboys, and smelly feet, we were quite glad to disembark the 'luxury' bus.
We got dropped off along the main beach front, and having asked many people where our hotel was, with no luck, we did eventually stumble across it. We stayed at the Moonlight hostel, set back from a bustling road full of bars containing old dirty men with young thai women, massage parlours, hotels, and plenty of street food vendors.
Greeted by a very kind, old looking Jackie chan, we were shown to a nice clean room. At this point we thought it'd be nice to 'catch some rays' so down to the beach we went, for some late afternoon sun worshiping. After a few hours on the beach being approached by locals selling this, that, and the other, being squid, jet skis, and sweet corn, we decided to go back to our room, freshen up, and head out for some grub! Amelia found a recommendation on Tripadvisor, called a Taste of Thailand, located in the Haven hotel. Good food, but service was lacking! On the way back, we discovered an amazingly colourful and exotic fruit market! Armed with my penknife, we decided to be adventurous and tackle some of these unusual fruits!
The following day we decided to go back for more! So breakfast consisted of, guava, dragon fruit, mango, pineapple, grapes, and some weird big orangey thing as Amelia calls it. We spent the rest of the morning chilling on the beach, eating corn on the cob, drinking from coconuts, and avoiding the litter scattered across the seafront! I think we were both quite appalled by the amount of crap floating in the sea on Pattaya beach!
After seeing the amount of massage parlours on our way back to the hostel, we asked ol' Jackie Chan for a recommendation. He sent us on a quest, to find a blind masseuse! After what seemed like hours we finally found him! And by the way, the name of the place Jackie had written down for us was nothing like the name that was on the sign, which ended in something like porn :-/
You'll be glad to hear there was no porn, or happy ending involved! Just me being pushed, pulled, twisted, and cracked by a 5 tonne blind sumo wrestler, whilst Amelia enjoyed her soothing massage by a petite blind Thai lady.
We spent the evening searching through endless street stalls, and eventually finding a lovely little stall with seating, serving some amazing Thai curries and rice. Finished the night with a White Russian and Mojito on the beach!
The next day we day we headed to the Sanctuary of Truth, a completely wooden structure built to preserve and revive ancient knowledge. Standing at 100m, or the equivalent to a 20 story modern building.
We were given a very detailed tour, by a friendly and well spoken Thai man. Before the tour began we were given hard hats for inside the sanctuary. We assumed this was protection from the many workers who were up on the scaffolding having to continuously refurbish the Sanctuary, but no, it turns out they are to protect you from the Dove s*** - as the Chinese guy (and almost me) on our tour unfortunately found out! The Sanctuary of Truth was absolutely incredible. The structure and intricate detail was beyond belief! After almost sweating our body weight looking around the sanctuary, we stupidly decided to take a walk to a viewing point overlooking Pattaya city. We made most of the journey on foot, however the last leg was made on the back of a moto (moped taxi) much to Amelia's resistance!
In the evening we went back to the same food stall from the previous night for some more delicious, bargain priced street food (40bhat = £1ish), sat on the beach with some beers to watch a huge firework display - the main attraction from a weekend festival.
Saturday we took a 30bhat, 40 minute boat trip to Koh Larn. Jumped on a moto over to a secluded beach on the other side of the island, about 10 minutes away.
Spent the day chilling, and swimming - as this beach was rubbish free with an inviting clear blue sea! We very much, and I say we, including Amelia - the used to be non-fish eating person, enjoyed a shark and papaya salad lunch.
For dinner we went back to the same stall for the third night in a row, but this time I found a chicken's foot in my curry! I wasn't sure about eating this, so I decided to check with the chef, and apparently they are edible!
McDonald's for breakfast today, had enough of this healthy fruit lark! And back to Bangkok we go, this time on the government run coach, with no ladyboys, plenty of leg room, and nice ice cool a/c.
Checked in to Pas Cher hotel, and off out to finish off some sight seeing we missed first time round. Well that's what we were hoping anyway, most places were closed due to preparations for the King's birthday (5th December). That plan down the pan, we took a leisurely walk to Lumphini park, seeing the Erawan shrine on route, where people visit from a far to have their prayers and wishes answered.
Suited and booted (jeans and converse), we were accepted in to the sky bar on the 64th floor of the state building, where the Hangover part 2 was filmed! At 590 baht for one drink, we took our money down to Patpong, no not for more ping pong shows, but to have some food and more than one drink!
Monday 1st December, took a flight to Cambodia....
