Day 27 - Easy morning but unfortunately with no fishing entertainment to accompany breakfast. Our taxi was at 11:00am so we just sat on the loungers and read our books in what will be the last peaceful part of our trip. The taxi duly arrived a bit early so we set off for the airport.
Arriving at Phu Quoc 'international' airport, it was like a ghost town as they have built this big new airport that will cater for tourists when all the new proposed resorts are built but for now, there are only 5 or 6 flights a day. We were there 2 hours before our flight a requested and in the airport there was us two and about 50 staff which was a surreal experience to say the least. 5 minutes later another couple came in and waited for the check in desk to open. This didn't open for a while which was frustrating when they said you must be there 2 hours before your flight to check in. Anyway, we were the first people to check in for the flight and then through security. You could tell the staff were bored as when we were walking away, they asked to scan my bag again! Quick sandwich and then a wait by the gate. Roughly 30 minutes before the takeoff was due, a load of locals turned up who obviously wouldn't be so stupid to turn up 2 hours before the flight!!
A quick 35 minute flight to Can Tho 'international' airport flying over some of the Mekong delta. We have just been to 2 international airports and only seen 1 plane, ours, very strange indeed. Staff were obviously bored at Can Tho as well as they wouldn't let us out until we'd shown our boarding cards and luggage tags which I had kept but had no idea where. Finally out of the airport, we jumped in a taxi which duly took us to the wrong hotel but luckily our hotel was not too far away, clever ploy on a metered taxi. We were met at the front desk by the owner and his assistant who both had great wide smiles and both spoke really good English. Alice was in first, "Ar, Chris" he said with gusto, "Nope, that's Chris there" came a sharp reply and a laugh. A strong handshake and a warm welcome, just what was required. Within 5 minutes we had sorted our tour to the floating markets in the morning and and also our bus to Ho Chi Minh City in the afternoon. We were shown to the room and it was really good, a decent shower, good bed, air con, what more could you want. Quickly dropped the bags and went exploring but more importantly, lunch. Ended up in a riverside restaurant in the newly renovated 'old' market that was in the guidebook, looked at the menu an saw the prices were expensive. Starving we went with and then when our food came out, we knew why it was expensive, each dish could of fed the whole Vietnamese army! Both 'struggled' through and then had a trundle around the city. Had a drink in a cafe and then venture back to the hotel, scoping potential dinner venues on the way. We stopped down by the river to just watch the world go by for a bit and were offered numerous, "you buy boat" boat trips to the floating markets.
Showered and changed, we headed out for dinner but still hasn't decided on where to go. A few choices, one being Mekong restaurant and another Phoung Nam. Having a walk past the Mekong it seemed to be pretty packed so we went to Phoung Nam. Chicken satay for Alice which not only made her cry but nearly blew her head off it was so hot. Hot beef dish for me in a clay pot and a beer which bizarrely came with a lipton tea glass. After dinner we wandered along to the Mekong as we had heard they sold a 'local beer'. We went in and the place had quite a few ex pats in there. One randomly just had a bottle of whiskey sitting front of him and he kept ordering cokes. Local beer was nice and 440ml for about 25p can't be bad. Headed back to the hotel as we were being picked up at 05:00 tomorrow morning!
