Chris and Carol's World Trip
We seem to have got out of Borneo at about the right time! Tension was building up between Malaysia and Indonesia over Borneo when new reserves of oil have been found and there is a dispute over who owns it. A sizeable contingent of both countries warships and F-16 fighterplanes are now stationed just off the Borneo coastline ready to scrap it out, although for now both sides have agreed to hold talks. Add to that, Borneo experienced 10ft waves whilst we were there and everyone is a bit panicky about another Tsunami and so there was a bit of tension, but it turned out to be quite normal due to high winds.
We took a flight from Borneo which brought us into Kuala Lumpur (KL) back on the Malaysian mainland.
KL is the capital and is a city of high rises, mainly fuelled by the Asian book of the 1990's. KL posessed the highest building in the world between 1996 and 2003; the Petronas Towers at 463m. It was recently overtaken by Taipai 101 in Taiwan which is 508m. However as the Petronas Towers learned, the title of World's Tallest Building doesn't remain very long and the Shanghai World Financial Centre planned to overtake Taipai 1001 in 2007.
We took the opportunity to go up the Petronas Towers to admire the view of the city. It is possible to go upto the 41st floor (of 88) to the link bridge which connects the two towers. Even today the city of still building heavily and hauling itself into the 21st century. The country still retains it's British roots; having only taken care of it's own affairs since 1956. Cars drive on the left, the plug sockets are british style and english is well spoken. KL still maintains a set of victorian style housing and a cricket pitch in the middle of town in Merdeka Square, which we visited today.
KL is also a mix of a number of ethnic types, including Chinese and Indian, each of which has their own district within the city. In China town, you can buy a fake anything. In the Indian quarter, needless to say, we have been tucking into the Indian curries most nights. For about two pound each we have been able to eat great curries including drinks in local restaurants. There's also plenty of Western type restaurants mixed in, including the big chains (Hard Rock, TGI's etc).
Shopping seems to be a national pastime with so many malls selling every designer name known. We even found a Marks & Spencers!
