After many days of 5-6hour driving periods up in the beautiful Smokey mountains of North Carolina that delivered some of the best views, we decided to have an unorganized, limited driving day. First we stopped off at an Indian Reservation that although didn't interest me, certainly kept poppa occupied for a good hour or two. And as we were driving back down the mountains (did I mention the mountains were 6000 ft. and had 318 turns in 11miles? The locals say we were insane to drive up it in an R.V. but hey it was a challenge!), we came across a huge sky rail/chair lift that was incredibly steep as it went up part of the mountain. Although heights don't usually scare me, I have to admit…looking down once I got to the top made my legs shake a little. There was a 'ghost town' at the top of the mountain where we watched a dance show and a gun fight on the gravel streets whilst enjoying a sugar free ice cream (the only thing better than ice-cream? Sugar free ice cream).
This morning when we woke up, it wasn't long before we were on the road again after a grocery stop at Wal-Mart. Three episodes of sex and the city, a 40 min nap and 4 hours later we arrived at a camp site in Virginia. This is where I had the best night of the road trip to date… it started off with a lovely walk around the lake with nanna followed by one American experience I will never forget. After dinner, poppa got talking with the people in the Vans/R.V's next to ours and we ended up sitting by the campfire and trading stories about America and Australia. As most people are in this country, they were some of the friendliest people I have ever met. One of the old guys told me I'm more than welcome to come back to America when ever and he will look after me. Yay I have USA pals that have my back wohoo. And after explaining my dreams and love for New York, he mentioned how his grandson has just moved into an apartment on 5th avenue in Manhattan with a new job in finance….perhaps I could marry him? ;) As the night went on, a lady asked if I had ever tried a 'smore' before and after telling her I hadn't, she bought out a massive plate with a bag of huge marshmallows, Grandma Honey Biscuits and blocks of Hershey's Chocolate. Once she explained what to do, I toasted my marshmallows, piled the biscuits with chocolate, squished the melted marshmallow in like a sandwich and ate my first ever smore. It was to die for…literally the best thing ever. At this point I couldn't help but think about how lucky I was. I looked at my watch and realised it was 9.40am in Australia on a Monday morning, so at that time I would have been sitting in S&E early on a Monday morning probably wanting to shoot myself but instead I was in Virginia, sitting around the camp fire in the middle of an isolated lake/park eating smores and homemade cookies with the locals. It was definitely a moment I will never forget.
Tonight was such an incredible night that makes me realise how lucky I am and how amazing this holiday/opportunity is. Today actually marks exactly half way through the holiday and although I am missing home, I could honestly stay here forever and I don't want this to end. Tomorrow we are heading up to Pennsylvania which is rumoured to be really beautiful and have amazing scenic routes so that should be good!
