The best thing about traveling alone is that you have nowhere to be and no one to please and a whole new city to discover. I was able to just follow my curiosities around the city all day long and do whatever I pleased.
My day started early in the morning as I debated what time I should leave my dorm to get to the train station for my 8:30 train. I decided to leave a little earlier than I had to, and it was a good thing that I did. It turned out that my train was cancelled, but luckily the prior train was running late and just about to depart so I was able to get on that one.
I arrived in Lyon at around 10:00 am an it was raining unfortunately, and it continued to rain all day. But like any good traveller, I decided to make the most of my day, put on my raincoat, take out my umbrella and set out to explore.
I walked to the tourism office and picked up a map and scheduled a walking tour for later in the day. Then I headed uphill to visit some of the historic attractions in Lyon. I started at the romain theatres which were so beautiful. The rain made the grass really green so it was nice to walk around the ruins and picture what everything must have looked like back in its prime.
I spent the rest of my morning exploring the hill and found some roman aqueducts, an ancient cemetery and walked around the basilica.
At 2:00pm, I was able to check in to my hostel and drop off my heavy backpack, which made the rest of my day much easier ( and yes, I packed for a ten day trip with my backpack!)
At 3:00, I went on a walking tour that focused on the renaissance period. I learned that marionettes originated here and we saw a lot of renaissance style houses. Once the walking tour ended, I was free to my own thing, and also a bit wet and cold from the rain. So I went into a little creperie and enjoyed a sugared crepe and a cafe crème.
Of course once I had accomplished all I wanted to for the day, the rain stopped so I took it as a sign to keep exploring. I walked down the river and around fort saint jean and found a quiet little brasserie across from a park and had a glass of wine.
I finished my day by grabbing some groceries at the monoprix and heading back to the hostel to have dinner at around 8:00pm. Well I thought my day was over... While eating dinner in the common room I met a friendly Australian fellow who invited me out for a night walk. We walked around the city and enjoyed looking at the landmarks all lit up and finished the night off with a pint.
Overall a great day! Now I'm off to Paris!!
