The Northern Territory!
We spent a couple of weeks in Darwin but accommodation was so expensive we could only afford to stay an unpowered camp site, but we didn't have a tent... So we had to sleep in the car - which was alright whilst we were traveling up to Darwin but the novelty wears off rapidly when it becomes home!
We went to Crocodylus Park and crocodile farm when we first arrived... The crocs up here are just ridiculously huge and from the feeding show it became evident that they would have no trouble gobbling me up... They focused alot on public awareness of the crocs and we were told they take over 200 saltwater crocs a year out of the Darwin Harbour, another load from the Adelaide River and there's loads more around! It's crazy! They also have a zoo with lions, tigers, baboons, monkeys, snakes, horses, kangaroos.... The list goes on but they also had loads of turtles :) man I love turtles! The Indian Star Turtle is the new favorite and if anyone wants to buy me one I will be your best friend forever!!!! We also got to hold a baby crocodile here, the little ones are actually pretty cute.
Litchfield National Park is one of the most incredible places I have ever been too, I can't even begin to describe how amazing the waterfalls and natural hot springs are, but I took so many photos hopefully they'll do it some justice! We went swimming in Florence Falls and Berry Springs (a couple of the very few croc and jellyfish free swimming areas in the whole of the NT) and the water is just perfect and so clear! Also saw our first snake in the NP, was bloody massive! Turns out it was only an Olive Python which are non venomous but look pretty similar to the King Browns which can indeed kill you and like to bite you just because they can so we tended to just try and keep our distance from all snakes anyway.
We spent a fair bit of time in Darwin centre too, saw a big aboriginal rights protest, received the best care package from my beautiful muma and were unsuccessful fishing at the harbor!
We left Darwin to work in the outback at the Victoria River Roadhouse, we worked 7days a week as all rounders; cooking, cleaning, fuel operators, bar etc and we met some amazing people here! They did scenic helicopter flights over the escarpments and up the river which we got to jump in sometimes, the best views you could ever imagine! We walked up one of the escarpments one evening and it's just the most amazing untouched landscapes I've ever seen! There was also some wild cows in one of the back fields that I used to hand feed bread and tomatoes and there is a cattle station 20kms away where the reality TV show 'Keeping Up With The Joneses' is filmed, these guys are crazy and go mustering in helicopters! We also got to fly to the station to refuel and see the animals and what not! We lived in one of the motel rooms and had gecko's living in the bathroom walls - for the first few days I spent hours trying to catch them and put them outside until I realized it was impossible and just named them Gerry and Samantha and became friends! I did get bit by something on the arm whilst I was in the shower but it was more likely to be a spider ... Felt like I had someone punching me in the arm for 3days and I've got a scar from it. They're all tough as nails in the NT though!!
It was a bit of a shame to leave really but I got a bit poorly and had to have an operation so after resting up for a few days we used it as an excuse to go back near the sea!
Next stop QLD!!
