Our last night bus arrived very early at 5.30 in Cusco. We made our way to our hotel, where they fortunately had our room ready, so we went back to sleep for a while.
Later we got up and started the first of what would be MANY calls to the insurance companies about my accident...
Eventually we were finished for a while so headed out to walk through the town. Cusco is absolutely beautiful, and we had a lovely time wandering through it's hilly streets (which caused a lot of people to lose their breath given the altitude). Cusco was the centre of the Inca empire, so when the Spanish conquerors arrived they naturally transformed it into a colonial centre, and there are still loads of their beautiful old churches, streets and squares.
We went to the tour company we had booked the Inca trail with to discuss my options and getting a porter who could assist me. We then spent some time shopping for clothes for the trail and catching up with people from home.
Later we went to the Inca Museum to look around. It was actually really interesting and was full of archeaological finds from throughout Peru's history, from the earliest humans to the colonisation. It felt like they had more items than they knew what to do with! We were both really impressed. No photos allowed though - shame.
For dinner we found a gorgeous French restaurant, with lots of lovely French wine and a hot raclette cheese to melt on a selection of meats, cheeses and pates, as well as lovely soft bread and spiced potatoes. Delicious, and a very welcome change from llama and the horrible dry round rolls they have all over western South America! I couldn't even fit in dessert!
