We spent the first part of the day going over to Cal Orc'a - the site of the largest set of dinosaur footprints in the world. They are strangely in a wall - earthquakes in the Andes have bent what was originally flat land next to a lake up into a v shape, so the prints are now on a massive wall! It was interesting because it was so unusual, and we quickly saw why the footprints had been left after everyone in the group kept falling in the deep sticky clay at the side of the wall! The dinosaurs had the same thing which made footprints, were then preserved in the clay by other soil falling on them.
The site is owned by and next to a massive limestone quarry, with trucks passing constantly. The footprints aren't preserved and one day they will be lost. The guide told us that c 200 were lost following a landslide a couple of years ago, they were lucky they found more underneath! But the landslides are a big risk to them - even whilst we watched stones constantly slid down at one end.
After we headed back in the Dino bus to the centre of sucre, where we took a few pictures around and indulged in a lovely savoury crepe each and a gorgeous hot chocolate and chocolate smoothie at one of the many chocolate shops!
We then headed back up to our hostel to enjoy a bottle of wine on the balcony and enjoy the amazing rooftop view before dinner! On the way we each bought a 'genuine' alpaca jumper to keep us warm as we go up north. Apparently most are made in Taiwan so not convinced it's authentic but we like them!
