I had heard many times to skip this small little town...because there is nothing to do and stores close at 8. Kep was my last relaxed town before the next major tourist destination, so I was excited to soak up the 'nothingness' it had to offer. After an interesting ride into town from a shaman from Kampot, Kep was exactly what I was looking for. This small ocean side town has so much to offer if you are willing to go a few km out of your way. I rented a bicycle and explored for over 100km, visiting the Phenom Saser, also I known as the elephant cave, the salt fields, spending time at the local beach eating papaya salad and fried bananas and riding in the country side to see the life, the hard working life of rice farmers. It was a truly relaxing town that you could spend a week, make it feel like a month and never be bored. My only misfortune was having some issues when getting directions to Angkoul beach, making my 24 km ride into 70km...but even if I was exhausted, had a sore butt, got chased by 1/2 a dozen dogs, ate plenty of bugs on my last 8km in the dark...the beach was perfect. White sand, palm trees, practically deserted with coconuts for sale. Paradise...so I thought. Most people go to Kep to get to Tonsai ( Rabbit) Island. So after spending 4 nights I got on the boat and almost never came back. There is something so calming about this island it makes you walk around with a giant smile on your face. I met two great people on the ferry and became basically inseparable during our stay, coaxing each other to stay 'just one more night'. Our idea to walk around the island left us in a muddy mess up to our knees, conquering viscous mosquitos, crabs, spiked trees, jagged rocks while trying to beat the rising tide and the sunsetting. Found out afterwards you can only go around using the path..oops, it was still worth a good laugh. After that day, it got lazy.. Days only revolving around food, sun, beer, beach campfires, hammocks and swimming with the fluorescent plankton at night when the electricity went out. I had seen it before, but never like this.. Like tiny constellations all around you when you move, they even stay in your skin for a while. So many adults playing in the water like toddlers in a bath tub. Amazing! After my one day trip turned into 4... I pried myself away and still missing it sometimes, even the scorpion in my shower and the mini tarantulas in the bungalow. What a place. For my last day in Kep, I went to a new school to volunteer. Although there wasn't much too much to do since it was just getting started, it was fun to play with the kids, practice my clay modeling 'skills' and playing toss the rugby ball. Next, the west coast for more beaches and trekking!
