The one where I take my twins advice, but more importantly the one in Singapore.
Singapore, Singapore
So after the twins request of shorter blogs, here goes, after less than a week I give you blog number seven..enjoy.
So our first week in Asia, and yes you guessed it we are still in Singapore. We are living the absolute dream right now so why would we want to move on?!
So after two short flights, and a ridiculous time killing experience in Darwin airport, the dullest airport you could visit, we arrived in Singapore. Of course you need to be informed of our food for this flight - sweet F A. To say me and Faye were disappointed was an understatement, so we bought a stupidly expensive wrap, a very dry one I must add, and drowned our sorrows in sleep.
So after our round the world tour of visiting many of my family members and friends, mine and Faye's last visit was to Ian, Vangie and son James in Singapore, and what amazing hosts they were.
Sorry I keep starting paragraphs with so by the way.
We had left Australia in luxury and we thought it would take a lot to beat that but Ian's house put our hotel experience to shame, and it was easy to say that the time we were going to spend with them was going to be pure heaven - a million miles away from the true life of a backpacker. Not only was this house on four floors, it had five bedrooms and seven bathrooms for three people, along with a roof top terrace and a pool - me and Faye were going to spend the next few days living and being treated like royalty.
Most mornings were greeted with a swim in the pool and our first two days involved Vangie taking us into the centre to show us around and help us complete our to do list for Singapore - Vietnamese visa, malaria tablets and sending a parcel home being the dominant ones. We were kindly treated to lunch on both occasions, she introduced us to many Singapore delights, banana fritters being a winner and this hideous ice dessert with ingredients such as sweet corn being the loser. Put this dessert aside, we could very much get used to being ladies who lunch! We are definitely looking forward to what the rest of Asia has to offer food wise!
I should also add we spent most of the afternoon in Topshop, which very much excited us as you can all imagine.
The evening of our second day we headed to the Singapore's Night Safari, yes some would say it was odd to be going to the zoo at 8pm, however, it was a pretty cool place and would seem the norm over here. Being a Friday night we were 'privileged' to witness 'the creatures of the night' show, which we felt horrendously old for and took us back to the days of watching shows in Disney World - of which we were the correct age for. Age aside, the show was actually pretty decent, the highlight being seeing an otter recycle plastic water bottles in to the correct container.
I know I have been spoilt by seeing an amazing array of animals in Kenya, but this Night Safari did offer something that I had previously not witnessed - seeing the animals at night - didn't see that one coming did you. We took the tram ride, you could walk the route but why would you want to do that when this tiger print tram was on offer, around the park seeing animals such as Giraffes, Lions, Tigers, Rhinos, Leopards, Zebras, Elephants etc - you name it we saw it.
On our third day we planned to sight see, however woke up to torrential rain, thunder and lightning so we thought an open top bus was possibly not the best option. We spent the day with Ian and Vangie, who treated us to their traditional chicken and rice for lunch, simple yet satisfying, and we spent the afternoon and evening being entertained by James. This day did involve us spending the vast amount of around £70 sending 6kg of weight home, you may think we are stupid but you try carrying 19kg of entire s**t on your back for three months - we definitely needed to get rid of stuff to make carrying it a little more enjoyable. We paid more for air mail so let's just pray it arrives!!
So after Day four, it was lunches 3 to Singapore sights - zero. Well one if you call the night safari a sight. So let's see if we were to achieve anything on day four? You'll be pleased to know the answer to this was yes, today was a successful day. Leaving the house at 9am, returning at 9pm, we can surely say we achieved lots, made possible by our breakfast of bacon and eggs - cracking start to the day! (First bacon of the trip you should know).
We opted for the easy/lazy route of the typical red sightseeing bus you get all over the place. Faye had the bright idea of sitting on the bus for the first tour to get a feel for the city and enjoy the ride but more importantly to ensure we were getting every pennies worth.
Our first stop was Little India, and that pretty much sums up what was here, an interesting insight in to the delights of India. Our next stop was Raffles Hotel, where we spent the time feeling very much out of place. It was then to Chinatown, where we grabbed some food, shared a meal for once, something that me and Faye find very difficult as you can imagine. We visited a few temples, where this time we spent the time feeling very much naked, note to self - wear more clothes in future. Last stop of the day was Marina Bay Sands Hotel, for anyone who isn't aware of this hotel - Google it. It is pretty spectacular and the views you get from the top were amazing. We went up to the 56th floor around 6pm, so we were able to see the view in the day, at dusk and at night - three in one hey, again trying to get the most out of our money! Singapore at night was by far my favourite and seeing a light show from the top made it that little bit more special. After a long and tiring day we headed back to our five star abode and we were certainly ready for bed. I took around 500 photos this day just to highlight how much we saw!
It was our fifth day that we were supposed to be moving on, but of course, we extended our stay by a few nights, we really were starting to think will we ever leave and I think we'd both quite happily stay here with the company and hospitality of Ian, Vangie and James for the remaining two months if we could!!
Due to our longer period of time here it meant one thing, other than being treated amazingly for a further couple of days, but it meant we saw our little Dutch friends Emma and Laura again, that we met in Australia. We spent the day catching up on the past week without them and wandering round the shops! Perfect way to end our visit you could say.
So after a week of hanging around like a bad smell it was time for me and Faye to take the plunge and explore what the rest of Asia has to offer. After saying our goodbyes and a huge thank you to Ian, Vangie and James for everything, we were headed for Kuala Lumpa on our first experience of an Asian bus, I will report back next time bringing you Asia; Part 2, wherever this may be.
Bye for now friends.
