We're now in Siem Reap in Cambodia after spending a few days in the capital Phnom Penh. Our bus journey from Vietnam was fine and went very smoothly. We both couldn't believe how expensive Phnom Penh was, given it isn't the finest of capitals we've seen so far. The area around the Tonle Sap river was where we stayed, and the riverside bars and places to eat were ok but you couldn't actually see the river for construction work. The weather was really warm and we spent a day relaxing, one around the palace grounds, and the final day at the S21 museum and killing fields at Choeung Ek. That was a pretty gruesome and hard hitting day and it brought home the extent of the brutal genocide that took place in the 70's in Cambodia, but a day we both thought essential to find out more about what happened.
We decided to move on pretty sharpish up to Siem Reap as Phnom Penh was pretty scruffy and dirty in some areas and not too safe, but we did find a nice area on our last night though, typical. We went for a beer at the guesthouses on the Boeng Kak lake and it was great. The bars and restaurants are built on wooden platforms on the lake and the sunset views were great. We headed back after turning down a few illegal substances - Cambodia is rife with them, and thought we could have stayed there a few nights had we not booked our bus. But anyway, we're in Siem Reap now which is more laid back with a small town feel to it. There's plenty of bars and places to eat, and of course Angkor Wat. We're either going tomorrow or the day after and it should be an amazing day, or 2 as the tuk tuk drivers tell you that is needed to explore the temples. I wonder why that is?
We were going to put some more pictures online today, but the computer I'm using doesn't have a USB port, so it may be a few more days until they're on.
