So.. I fundraised about $2500. Where did your donations go?
- - Textbooks supplied for the children at the rural orphanage in Kinangop
- - A new tyre for my host dad's car as without it he could not commute to the ''local'' (2 hour drive) town for supplies for the orphans
- - Snacks for the students at the adult special needs school in Kibera slum- 1 treat a week where they could have food to break up their monotonous diets
- - Assisted with cost of daily snacks for the students at school
- - School supplies for the special needs school:
o Folders to create for future volunteers to ensure continuity. Previously volunteers had no point of reference for information about the school, the students or how they could assist
o Notebooks for the student folders
o A hole punch to thread information onto the rings in the folders
o Note paper for the school teachers
- -Small miscellaneous supplies for the school:
o Detergent to help keep things clean, i.e. dishes
o Sponges to wipe the tables and get rid of some of the filth
o A bucket, mop and disinfectant to be able to clean up urine when the students soil themselves
- -Paid for an 8-12 month full-time, paid apprenticeship for an adult with special needs to undertake a panel beating course and obtain a guaranteed job
- -A photo album, and printed pictures, for the school. Both so students can look at pictures of themselves and get a sense of achievement, and so people who do the tour of Kibera organised through NVS can truly understand some of the things we did with the students
- -For the youth group (to assist ex thieves continue a safer way of life):
o A new lock so their supplies do not get stolen again
o Garbage bags
o 4 shovels
o 7 rakes
o A handcart for their rubbish collection service, which they can rent out for extra income
o A metal 6 foot sign advertising the services they offer
o Black and white paint for the sign
o Bus fares for the members of the youth group so they could help me transport the items
o A fee for the handcart so we could transport it back to the slum
- -Printing costs to print a 2013 calendar to assist the special education teacher aides
- -Printing costs to print off resources to run the interview skills training session
- -A 6 month beading course for one of the adults in the special needs school so she can learn a skill to obtain income and help support herself and her son
- -6154 sanitary pads, provided to teenage girls at the HIV centre, which will return up to 100 girls to school for an entire year
- - Supplies for the construction of the over toilet aide:
o Saw
o Wood materials
o A ruler
o Nails
o A thank you present for the volunteer who gave up his time independent of his own volunteering project to build it for me
- - Supplies for donation at the primary school within the slum:
o Toothbrushes x 25
o Toothpaste x 25
o Water bottles x 25
o Chocolates x 25
o Lollies x 25
o Popcorn x 25
o Erasers x 25
o Zip lock bags x 25
o Lollipops x 25
- -Bought a bracelet at the primary school as profits go towards the school and paying for the teachers to try and encourage EVERY class to have a teacher
- -Sponsored 2 x orphaned elephants for a year at the elephant orphanage
- -Bought 2 x T-shirts at the KCC slum as a large percentage is profit that goes directly back to the school
- - Bought 3 x bracelets at the KCC slum beading centre as the profit goes directly to women trying to save money and escape the slum
- - Donated $200 to the doctor within the slum to assist her with her bills as she goes above and beyond what she needs to do
- -Thank you presents provided to the special needs teachers who are helping improve the student's lives and to the NVS worker who was absolutely crucial to helping me use this donation money
OTHER NON DONATION RELATED ASSISTANCE
- -Ran physical therapy sessions- including handwriting programs into each student's folder
- - Set up profiles on each student- including visiting the local doctor to obtain more information
- - Created a volunteer folder- organised for the nurse volunteer to add sections about the conditions our students had, added a ''how can I help'' list for new volunteers, included a section of basic Swahili and requested for the teachers to translate it for accuracy
- -Interviewed for special needs teachers
- - Created bracelets to possibly sell when the tours come through to generate income for the school
- - Ran activities with the students, both self-initiated and requested by the special needs teachers
- -Cleaned the school- washed the doors, walls, windows etc.
- -Participated in a manicure day for the HIV positive women
- -Erected the toilet curtain
Some of these things were small, and some were big changes, but every bit counts. I could not have achieved anywhere near the amount of things I did without your donations. Thank you so much to each and every one of you!
XO

mum Cathy, This is amazing. I know we heard about these things during your stay but to see it all collated like this is incredible. Yes it is great for us to see where the donations actually went but it will be longlasting reminder for you
Monica What a crazy, scary, dirty, exhausting, emotional, eyeopening, rewarding, memorable adventure. Such a good read tho :)
