Friday 27 June 2014 Budapest - Vienna
Sunny 26C
This morning we set off at 8.15 to catch the train to Vienna. I still had about $20 in Hungarian currency which we managed to spend on food for our journey. We had booked seats on the train which proved to be necessary as the carriages were crowded. It was a 3 hour trip and the scenery we passed was full of wind turbines, corn and wheat. The time passed quickly and we found ourselves surrounded by Australians!
Our first impressions of Vienna are of a very structured cosmopolitan city, the metro is very easy to use and in no time at all we were in our modern apartment in Singerstrasse. Unfortunately the weather is due to deteriorate on Sunday and we are her for just 3 days so this afternoon we set off for the Schonbrunn Palace. We had heard it was very crowded but thought we would try our luck and go at 2pm – perhaps most people go in the morning. It proved to be a great idea as we arrived, walked up to the ticket office and collected our tickets for the Grand Tour, then onto the entry and picked up our headsets for the 40 room tour in English. There were no crowds and no queues, we saw everything with ease and after the palace wandered into the gardens.
The rooms were beautiful and the palace in general in much better condition than the Palace of Versailles in France. The white walls and gold paint work is unique and the large enamel wood heaters installed in most of the rooms were impressive. We left the Palace and wandered the gardens which gave us beautiful views to the palace and the Gloriette, the fountain was magnificient. No photos are allowed inside the Palace so the only photos I can provide are of the outside.
After a few hours of exploring the grounds we went back to our apartment to rest our weary feet. On the way we got off the train a couple of stops early to have a look at the Opera House and some of the buildings near by. We have a lovely apartment on the 5th floor of a modern block just 100m from Stephansplatz. There is plenty to see here and we are looking forward to tomorrow.
