Day 90 ctd - And so it rained and there was thunder and lightening as we pulled into town. Luckily Tony from Port Macquarie Backpackers met us and soon we were inside our brightly coloured dorm room. Not wishing to brave the rain we had a night on the sofa watching How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.
Day 91 - After a walk by Kooloonbung Creek and past St Agnes Church we arrived at St Thomas' Church where two old ladies eating cake (Olivia and I in a few decades?!) played us a tape on the 1824 convict built church's history and we climbed its tower to see photos and items from the local area. Next up was Port Macquarie Historical Society Museum with a hugely detailed town history, local's household items and dresses and an old school boy's map of England detailing Swindon and Marlborough. A man with a great talent for English accents showed us around the 1869 old courthouse, kept in great condition and containing all the old court records. Lunch followed in the 1835 Garrison shopping precinct and Olivia bought some shorts, before being accused of shoplifting! The sun was out as we strolled along the Breakwall with its stones colourfully painted in poems, names and drawings. Uphill and past numerous beaches we made it to the Koala Hospital in time for the 3pm tour and feeding time. It was great to see more of the cuddly creatures being helped back to full health and we even met the 24 year old world's oldest koala 'Birthday Girl' who waved at us, and Barry the koala with a bad back. Also on site was Roto House, a pretty timber house from 1891. We walked back through the town to buy food supplies before returning to the hostel. Tony took us out to see some roos, but sadly for the first time ever there weren't the promised 50 or 60 on the golf course but one or two hiding in the distance so after a drive round searching for more, and failing, we went back to get Dominos. A meat lover pizza and Almost Famous made for a good night in before packing had to be done and an early night under our lovely dooners (duvet).
