Ola,
Well have now arrived in Rio and am enjoying the feel of warmth and humidity in the air.Have been taking things here pretty easy at the moment as I will be back here in July.
Our first experience in Rio was on the freeway from the airport to the hotel. The traffic was pretty bad and we were thinking it must be peak hour traffic, however we then saw guys standing in the middle of the road selling packs of chips/crisps and two minute noodles to passing motorists. When someone stopper to buy the goods the whole lane came to a halt. The guys would actually stand between lanes selling the goods.A police car was actually parked nearby watching them creating traffic chãos without a worry. We then passed a park and saw a old drunk walking around the monumet.James and I thought his not is here and then shore enough, down came the shorts as he exposed himself before sitting down in the grass to go about his business. We got to the hotel and thought about our introduction to rio and didnt really know what to make of the place.
As time hás gone on and we have started to explore this city we have discovered that it is a wounderful city and a city which absolutley buzzes at carnival time.We also visited a bar strange enough.James and I were planning to work on our portugese while ordering beer. Our phrase for the evening was to be oomess mo perforvour, or same again please. The bar man must have been on to this as every time you got to the last mouthfull of beer he would bring two new beers to the table and watch as you polished off the last few mouthfulls, staring intently to whoever it was who was last to finish their beer. The service was awesome but we starting to wonder as to how we actually stop the beer from coming to the table (not a problem we have ever had to worry about before).
James and I also caught up with shane and renee while in rio.We went to the red and black ball which is held as part of the lead up to carnival. The Idea was simple, you wear red and black and as little as practical (shorts and a shirt) and go to party which kicks off at 11pm and góes till late. The ball is after rios football team called flamengo. It was also a night when James and I met the local cocktail - caprinha. You had to purchase drink tickets for the type of drink in advance. We had a few beers already so opted for the caprinha, as it seemed quite popular. At first the drinks were poured behind the bar, and I thought how do you know if you are getting full pours.I had no need to worry, as they dont use measures in Brazil, the barman just pours to his hearts content the amount of booze. And they pour a lot.In the end we were actually wishing he poured more mixer and not so much rum.The relationship with caprinha is now on hold for a little while. The party wrapped up for us around 5am.It was enought time to get back to the hotel and grab 2 and a half hours sleep before heading out to tour sugarloaf mountain and corcova.Corcova is where the big Jesus is, while sugarloaf gives very impressive views of the city. The day was a long day and everytime we werent walking we were attempting to power nap.The views form the top of the mountains were very impressive but James and I were stuggling to stay motivated and thoughts of sleep were constantly on our minds.
Tonight is carnival night, with the party starting at 7pm and continuing till sunrise.Once again we will meet up with shane and renee and everyone is excited about actually attending carnival. Will try and write more tomorrow when I actually wake up....
