So I said my goodbyes to England and after an 11 hour flight, we arrived in HK. Quantas are an amazing airline! Well I spent about 8 hours of the flight asleep, but what I did experience was some good food, snacks, a little bit of vino and cabin crew that would do anything for you.
First impressions of Hong Kong...humid, techno-mad and ridiculously busy!
There was even free wifi (not like the ones in McDonalds Mum...!!) on a generic bus from the airport to the city centre which I was seriously impressed by! Everyone here walks around with iPhones and iPads and various other gadgets! Definitely a safe city to be in!
We found our hostel without too much trouble. Only one detour via a shopping centre which Tess decided must house the hostel... There was some logic to this in that the shopping centre was in the same building but the shops only went up 3 floor and we needed to get to the 8th floor. A MASSIVE rucksack and 2 other bags are not ideal when navigating around a narrow shopping environment!
For anyone who's just watched Hangover 2, the block that holds the hostel looks very like the block of flats from the film. Not ideal but standard for Hong Kong. The room is about 6ft x 10ft and that includes a "shower room". The shower room is literally a toilet next to a tiny sink with a shower head above the toilet. Interesting to say the least but again, this shoebox is standard for HK and ideal when only staying 2 nights.
We went for a wander round last night and had some chinese dishes. Many of the restaurants offer all sorts of funny cuts of meat inc. pork knuckle! We stook with some noodle dish with beef and a noodle soup with pork balls. Actually pretty tasty and all for £8 inc drinks.
Shops are iPhone cases galore! Gadgets are sold left, right and centre, perfume is everywhere and the ladies market is right opposite, offering lots of handbags, purses, jewellery etc etc
Tess braved a cup of tea. Oh dear. ERROR! It's like strong tea but made with condensed milk so it's sickly sweet and you could probably stand your teaspoon up in it! I think I might have to go cold turkey from my tea addiction.
So it is now 05:20 and I've been awake aaaages! Damn jetlag. Still looking forward to a good explore tomorrow!
Lots of love and laughter xxx

Grandma Shirley How wonderful to stay in touch like this. Think from your description, will give HK a miss (not that I ever had any desire to go there). Look forward to next chapter. Love XX
