Dunedin is the principal city of the region Otago as well as being the second largest city in the South Island. It's name comes from Dun Eideann, the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh. The city stands on the hills and valleys surrounding the head of Otago Harbour; the harbour and hills are the remnants of an extinct volcano.
As well as being in the Guiness Book of Records for the town with the steepest street in the World, Dunedin is also home to New Zealand's Cadbury Factory. Although Australia's Cadbury chocolate doesn't taste like home, I thought that New Zealand's might and so, feeling positive, I went inside for a tour. Unfortunately, it being a Sunday meant that the factory part was closed, on the upside, it cost a lot less to get in. We were shown a video (which was like porn but for chocolate lovers) and given a bag of free samples which included, two miniature Crunchie bars, a chocolate covered marshmallow fish and something else that was chocolate-banana flavour (these New Zealand folks have weird taste). After having our cameras and phones confiscated, we were taken to what used to be used for storing milk, a massive tower. Once through the door, we climbed a staircase that wound around the inside walls all the way to the top. When we got to the top, the guide pressed a few buttons and something moved above our heads. Before we knew it, we were stood watching a tonne of chocolate fall, like water, into a metal container below - the noise was almost deafening but the smell was simply divine. I wanted to put my hand in it but couldn't risk the possibility of being banned worldwide from Cadbury chocolate for life, instead, I could only dream. After a visit to the onsite shop however, my views quickly changed and I realised that the taste could never be as good as the smell (no matter how much I ate) - especially outside of the U.K.
After stopping in Dunedin for a few days, the next stop on the Magic Bus was Lake Tekapo; a few hours North of Dunedin and slightly more inland. It was freezing here, so cold infact that the town has it's own ice rink. Up the road from the hostel was a spa complex, I looked into going here in hope of warming up. The spas were closed but the sauna and steam were still running and so $5 later I was sweating - much better than being numb.
Within the township of Lake Tekapo lies Mount John. One afternoon, after attempting to store as much heat as I could from my hostel room and into my coat, I went for a walk up the steep sides of the mountain and to the summit. I was nice and warm once I had reached the top. The views were good, I could see the clear lake below and the Southern Alps too.
On my last night at the Lake, I thought that I would go and watch some local league ice-hockey. It was brilliant! I have never watched any before and although it wasn't a high level of play, it was clear that the players had been skating since before they could walk. I really got into it and all that cheering put me in the mood for the All Blacks V's England rugby match the next day.
