Yesterday we caught our bus to Siem Reap a long 5 hour journey before we arrived at our hotel. Pete was relieved because we were given a room on the ground floor, so no stairs to lug our big bags up. We were taken to a funky restaurant called The Blue Pumpkin, where you can sit on white sofas to eat. Pete went for pasta and I was tempted by the spaghetti bolognaise, but knew it wouldn't be as good as Mum's so I had the stir-fried pork with pumpkin, definitely the right choice, it was cracking. More great food followed in the evening at the Khmer Kitchen, this time a Khmer curry, if only I could get the recipes for all these dishes, but unfortunately they are keen to keep their secrets.
Today we were up early 5.30am, we were off to a traditional wedding. Our leader's brother-in-law was getting married and we were invited to the second day celebrations. The village it was held in was similar to the island one, with dirt tracks lined by trees and houses on stilts. We arrived and were given a dish of something to carry Pete had the beer, I had the cokes, others had bananas and food, we then walked in a line behind the groom and his family to the reception. There was a lot of waiting around involved, but it was great to see how a traditional Cambodian wedding is held, the gifts we carried were presented to the bride's parents, before we finally got a glimpse of the bride. I was pleased to see she had a traditional dress on rather than a meringue (we have seen many in shop windows). We had breakfast, watched the couple being blessed by relatives and threw flowers at them. About 12pm the other guests started to arrive in their best outfits and full make-up on, apparently 300 guests were expected. This was only a small wedding and usually at a big one there tends to be thousands of guests. We had lunch, some good food, some not so good like the chickens feet soup and cows innards. Surprisingly we didn't eat those dishes. We left about 1.30, but not before we were dragged onto the dance floor, some reason the boys in our group (Pete included) escaped onto our bus and left us to dance for 3 songs, while 300 guests stared at us.
