Well it's been nearly a month since my last entry so as you could expect, we have seen and done alot. Hopefully i can remember it all.
Starting off back in Streaky Bay, we went out into some pretty massive surf about 7 foot. Which doesn't sound like much but guys where getting barrels well above head hight. Rhys got a couple of nice waves but got crunched on one of them and the next 5 waves so went back to shore. I didnt get a wave but managed to get a little far in on a couple of occasions and also got cleaned up my two huge sets. Pretty scary stuff when the waves are that size! I got back out though and a pod of dolphins popped up and swam around all the surfers for a while so it was worth it.
Leaving Streaky we went and spent a night in Coffin Bay National Park. We had a drive around there and found a good spot to camp just of the beach for the night. It was a really great spot but it was very windy so that kinda sucked.
From there it wasn't far to our next stop in Port Lincoln where we spent the next three days. First stop like most place we have been was the info centre where we found we had timed our stay perfectly with the Port Lincoln Cup being held on friday. Again the weather was against us with it being very windy and rainy the whole time we were there including cup day. So we spent alot of time in the tent of at the pub.
We made our escape from the miserable wheather in Port Lincoln and drove all the way up the peninsula through Port Augusta and back down the other side a little to spend the night in Port Pirie. From there we went to explore some of the Flinders Ranges and do a little offroading. Got some great photos from the top looking back down to the ocean. We continued on driving and ended up staying on a beach about half way down the York Peninsula that night where we got a bit experimental with my camera that night and got some good shots. All of which are on facebook... ofcoarse.
Keeping with the theme of "roughing it" we drove right down to the tip of the peninsula and camped out at Innes National Park expecting to get some surfing in. Unfortunatly there was no swell, so no surfing. This was just the start of what was to be a long period of tiny swell.
The next day we started of driving, not really knowing where we were heading. We made it back up the other side of the peninsula to Port Wakefield and decided we should probably stop and figure out what we were going to do. we had the options of heading out to the Barossa Valley or keep going south to Adelaide. We decided on Adelaide and managed to ring and book a stay at a hostel in Glenelg. The hostel was in a great location just off the main street full of pubs, shops, restaurants and the tram line into the city. We had a ripper time in Adelaide, going to the city a couple of times, hitting the pubs with a welsh guy we were sharing our room with and going to see some shows at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
After such a great time it was hard to leave but we headed off south to Victor Harbor hoping to find some surf, but of course there was none. so we thought we might as well move on to the next town, Goolwa. driving out of Victor Habor we noticed alot of people at the local footy ground so stopped to check it out. Turns out it was the last round of the NAB Cup Fremantle vs Port Adelaide, so we went in and watched Freo lose yet another game.
After spending the night in Goolwa we drove to Robe were you can drive about 50km along the beach to Beachport. We did the first half of the drive then camped out on the beach and continued on the next morning. that was a great drive especially with the excitement of get bogged a couple of times along the way. We had lunch and did some minor repairs to the car in Beachport, then headed on to spend the night in Mt Gambier.
Mt Gambier was really just a stop off point with no much to do there but look at a big blue lake. Although it was a bloody nice looking lake! after looking at that we made it over the boarder into Vico and to our first town Portland where we camped a in a spot up in the hills. It pissed down with rain all night but the trusty old swag kept me warm and dry. Luckily it had it had cleared up by morning for the glorious day that was my birthday. We cooked up a massive birthday breaky then packed up all our soggy gear and hit the road headed for Warnambool.
As you would expect we checked ourselves into a caravan park and headed to the pub for a feed and some birthday beers. Now all i really wanted for my birthday was a surf. So the next day we went to the beach but the were still no waves. So we got the hell out of there.
Luckily for us Warnambool marked the start of the Great Ocean Road so we spent the next day checking out all the amazing coast line between there and Apollo Bay were we spent the next few days. Also timing our stay perfectly with St Patricks Day. So we went to the pub which was packed, Watched some footy and got into the St Pattys Day spirit. We then spent most of the next day a little worse for wear in our tent.
So that brings us to our current location, Lorne. Haven't really done much hear due to the lack of swell and average wheather, it is a really nice place but will be leaving tomorrow. Should end up somewhere near Torquay with reports saying there is a very large swell heading our way. should pick up some tomorrow but there is big stuff to come Friday and Saturday. Expecting around the 8-10+ foot make so will be good to see that hit Bells Beach!
