So I've finally got round to updating my blog and I might as well start at the beginning!
After a fond farewell at Heathrow Terminal 4, Dave Matt and I went through to the departure lounge and waited for out plane to be ready to board. While Dave and Matt sat and had a chit chat to pass the time I had a look round the shops. HMV did have some good offers on CDs but I decided not to buy anything, despite it all being duty free! As Mum had already armed me with USA Today Sports weekly I did not need to buy any reading material and after about half an hour we were able to board.
We were flying to Singapore on the world's largest plane, the Airbus A380, and I must say it was the best flight I have ever experienced. The facilities were excellent, boasting (slightly) more legroom than normal, touch screen monitors and a USB charger port for my iPod. In total I watched four films (Angels & Demons, Star Trek, The Hangover, and Terminator Salvation) as I only got about one hour of sleep on a 15 hour flight! That wasn't so great.
One handy feature of the entertainment system was the skycam, which was a webcam type camera fitted to the tail of the plane that allowed you to watch the plane taking off. There were also interacive maps and time zone charts to show the progress of our flight on our way to Singapore. The take-off was super smooth and the noise levels were suprising quiet for such a large plane. It was rather efficient.
Upon arriving in SIngapore we passed through customs and then boarded the next plane, all in the space of just over half and hour. However the next plane (An Airbus A330, a bucket of bolts compared to the A380) was missing a part that had to be located, installed, tested and signed off for before we could leave, resulting in a two hour delay. During this period I caught up on some much needed sleep and almost missed the take-off!
Once airbourne the flight was okay. The meals on both planes were pretty good for what they were, but nothing special. The entertainment was similar in choice and it was especially good not to have to put up with re-runs of Mr. Bean on the monitors whilst waiting for new parts any more!
The landing in Perth was a little on the dodgy side, with one set of wheels touching down before the other (inducing a slight roll to our landing). So I went from the smoothest flight I'd ever had to the dodgiest landing I'd ever experienced. But we all landed safely so all in all the pilots did a good job.
Going through customs was easy as all three of us managed to dodge the security scanners as we were a small party of travellers and had nothing to declare (except Matt, whose ginger biscuits were waved through with no problems). Steve (David's uncle) was ready and waiting for us at the airport and we hopped into his car and were off to Fremantle, where we are staying. He had managed to see that our flight was two hours delayed and so was able to go home and come back, meaning he didn't have to stand around for too long before we arrived. He kindly took us on the scenic route home through Perth and through Fremantle so that we could see bits of the city before settling down for the night. After unpacking and getting into bed the only thing really left to do was adjust to the time zone! Which is going to take some time. . .
