Alan Powell I was a National Service airman posted to Khartoum in 1950. The British Services Sailing Club had a gunboat on the Nile at Khartoum named the "Cairo". The mounting for the gun was still on the foredeck and we used it as our clubhouse. We had several 14ft half decked sailing dinghies and a few 17ft dinghies. These were moored alongside the Cairo. It makes one question the appropriateness of the patronising 'grey nomad' monniker for middle class older Aussies when you actually see what a true nomadic life is. I thought Vic Falls from the Zambian side as satisfying as from the Zim side but less stage- managed...not even rain coats! I have just realised that you would have been in Botswana at the sametime as our daughter Inga, who was seeking partnerships for (mainly positive) experiences but was only in Gabaronne. Marina Day Hi Sue and Russ - you dont know me but I live in Johannesburg and my husband and I are planning a Cape to Cairo in our Toyota Landcruiser starting November this year (not yet confirmed). I have been in touch with Deborah via email - this is where it started and she gave me her blog hence where I got yours. I am enjoying it and well done. Its great to get the latest news from both blogs as it assists us with our trip. Have fun and congrats - a great blog. J and W Dear Sue and Russ, Have been enjoying reading about your adventures, and glad to hear you're both safe and sound. Hope you have been taking stacks of photos (and backing them up!). Sounds like you had an unforgettable Christmas and New Year. A big "Hello" from Di, Michelle and Karen (who has just welcomed the new addition, "Mitchell", to the family). Sydney, and the coast, are presently sweltering with heat-wave temperatures of mid-30s to 40C! You're probably used to that, but it is hitting us pretty hard. Arthur Billy December 2, 2009: Hello Russ and Sue: Sue, after I copy paste your blog with tiny fonyts into a Word document, I then click on one of the links of Towns. The original blog opens and now the fonts are about a 8 or 9. I just loved the map of the route with the location pins and superimposed album thumbnail pictures. You are one clever lady. We are enjoying your report and the pictures very much. I for one wish I coud have been with you on this once in a lifetime fabulous trip even with it trials and tribulations. Your pictures ar are excellent. I would like to let you you that the font size on the Blog is about a 7 Font. To be able to read it, I have to copy it into a Word document and enlarge the fonts. I figured out a way to enlarge the bBog font size but it seemed a one time happeningand I could not duplicate it.. I will work on it some more. janet and mike Dear Sue and Russ, your travels sound wonderfully colourful, and it sounds as though you are enjoying Africa tremendously. We're more or less back in Perth after a few forays for work to Bombala etc. Now back to the vegeable garden, and working my former surgery in Mount Pleasant. we are really enjoying being at home after 3 years of peregrinaitons. Ryan has been here for two weeks in October, and will be back prior to working on the Aust. Open, so he'll be with us between christmas and new year. He and rob will both be in Melbourne in January, where Geoff and Louise will go to celebrate his 60th with the boys. I spoke to Bill and Bronwyn, and heard about the pre retirement travels, and about John Joppichs retirement and 60th party. Seems hard to believe that an era is ending, but lots of plans and dreams now becoming possible (notwithstanding SMC- share market crash!) I will be pottering to and from work, and Mike musing over the DIY- with light relief from the vegetable garden, whilst you are pushing the boundaries with such an exciting life.
