I can't keep up
So will try it this way.
And expand on it later.
500€ note ...they called it Bin Laden ...really hard to find, very few people have ever seen one!
Tiago refers to himself as 'Concentrated.'
He's not short.
Just 'concentrated'
( I'm stealing that one.)
Population...11 million
Plenty of water
European Union great for Portugal
After dictatorship, money for infrastructure, back to farming
Free health care
But have private insurance
Free education
18 years old ... exam ... Uni
Higher grades can enter public Uni for free
Otherwise pay
Min Wage 495€ month
Ave 1000€ month
Both work
Rent 450€ month
Asked for bailout to international fund.
Austerity measures
Sales tax 23%
12% unemployment
Spain 25%
Portugal supplies 70% of world's cork
Lots of limestone and marble.
1300s alliance England and still remains
WW2 neutral but sent army to fight under English flag
Bug from Africa killing all the huge palms.
(Like those in St Kilda)
Setubal fish market ... Amazing
Portugal ...No food and drink to go
Everyone sits.
No coffee to go.
Cork trees 25 years til first harvest
Then 9 years to get the skin back on the tree so they can harvest again.
Sorted into piles by quality
Older the tree, thicker the bark
Paint trees with last number of year harvested eg 3 = 2013 can harvest again in 2022.
Yep.
Doing those quick notes works.
Helps when I write up at the end of the day.
As a 'Hidden Treasure', we were taken the the fish market in Setubal.
This was fascinating.
Apparently it is one of the largest in Europe.
And spotlessly clean.
And so many different fish!
Also fruit and vegetables.
And those wonderful Portuguese tiles on the walls.
Loved it.
Wandered the small town.
It's beautiful.

Andrew Browning Hi Carolyn, Gee you’re having a ball, I can tell!!Fabulous country eh? ………and now you’ve had to change your blogging style to keep up…. oh, you noticed “no take away or coffee” hard just to grab something on the run isn’t it. Great bit of info on the cork trees, have you noticed the restaurants have large jars filled with corks from wine bottles, they don’t throw them away. Cold but sunny here, busy with a few domestics, but stopped to see what you are doing……. and boy isn’t that a magnolia tree??Weather looks great, keep having FUN. AndrewXx
