Craig & Jills Round the World Trip
Today was an early start as we caught our 7am flight on route to our flight over the mysterious Nazca lines. The plane that took us to Ica only seated 12 passengers and 2 pilots. We had a cosy seat at the back.
Ica airport was nothing more than a lamding strip and a couple of small huts. We hung around for half an hour watching a giant condor stretch its wings then we were called for our flight over the lines.
The plane here was no bigger than the giant condor we had just been watching, seating 6 passengers and only 1 pilot. The journey to Nazca was another half an hour over what seemed like endless desert and dunes. Again we werent expecting to see all this sand.
As we arrived at Nazca the strange shapes began to come into view. As the plane dived and swerved over the lines our faces and stomachs began to make their own shapes. We felt like we were in a fighter jet banking to our left and then to our right, dropping occasionally as the wind bufted us. (Its making jill sick again just thinking about it).
We spent 30 mins flying around different patterns, how surreal, where did they come from. Nobody knows!!!!!! Spooky. Try looking at those rectangular shapes and tell me they arent spaceship runways.....jill whats that over your shoulder......just a green looking reflection of me in the window. As much as we enjoyed it, it was good to get back on terra firm, gives us helicopters anyday, a much smoother ride!
Back in Ica after our flight we wandered round a small museum which was full of mummified bodies, not very nice as they looked too life like with hair etc, and those strange skulls you can see on the photos. Most of the other exhibits had been stolen in Oct 2004, so there were just wanted signs in the empty cabinets.
We then headed to a real oasis in the desert. Here we were driven at break neck speeds up, down, over and round the surrounding huge sand dunes. It was mad!!! We then got to try our luck at sand boarding down the near vertical dunes.
Seen as we cant go sledging this year, this was the next best thing. It was great, just like on snow but a bit hotter. We felt rather sandblasted afterwards, and we are still crunching on sand now. Jill has just about emptied her pockets too.
Today was another fantastic day, it really finished off our time in Peru. Get yourselves out here....
Just bring some earplugs, boy will it be good to get away from everybody beeping their horns. No we dont want a god dam taxi!!!!
Next stop Rio.....................
