So we struggled to make our minds up with what to do today! We would only be able to see two out of three caves in one day, but which three?! There was an adventure cave which sounded awesome but we were tired from travelling so much and it was a tad cold to be getting wet, so we decided to catch a bus to Phong Nha and hire mopeds to see the Paradise cave, which was suppose to be beautiful! We met an Italian guy called Manfredio and a Chinese guy called Lazer who decided to spend the day with us.
After a 50 minute bus journey we arrived in Phong Nha and headed to the main hostel in town, Easy Tiger. From there we hired mopeds and booked our night bus to Hanoi for that night. After grabbing a quick bite to eat, we set off for the day.
Driving through all the mountains through the Ke Bang National Park was amazing and absolutely stunning. It reminded me of a Jurassic jungle, I really enjoyed it! The National park has over 300 caves, varying in sizes. In 2009, the British Caving Research Association announced Hang Son Doong as the largest cave in the world being 200 meters high, 150 meters wide and 5 km long. It's so big it even has its own river, jungle and climate. In some parts of the cave, a large aircraft could fit through. Only 400 people a year can visit the cave which is also fascinating, so unfortunately, we weren't one of those lucky 400. Paradise cave was beautiful inside, so colourful and diverse. It is the longest dry cave in Asia with a length of 31.4km but you can only walk to 7km with a guided tour. We walked to 4kms without a guide and then back again.
Walking through the cave took a good few hours so we didn't have all that long to see another cave when we had finished, so instead we decided to explore more of the Jurassic jungle along the Ho Chi Minh Highway. We had another buddy join our group by this point, John from Manchester. The five of us took to the road on our scooters like a proper biker crew. We had such a laugh!
That night, the boys had some food in a local Vietnamese restaurant where the only things on the menu were pork rice porridge and gruel (yes, you did read that right... gruel). I passed on eating there so I ate at Easy tiger later that evening.
We said our goodbyes to John and Lazer, and boarded our sleeper bus at 10pm. Ourselves and Manfredio prepared ourselves for another night of no sleep on the bus and off we went! Although we hadn't seen as much of the caves that I would have liked to, we had had one of the best days driving around, but I would definitely like to return here at some point in the future to tackle more of a hike... maybe even the biggest cave in the world! Next stop... The capital, Hanoi!
