So, to carry on, we have arrived at Mawamba Lodge by boat followed by a nice lunch and a chill by the pool. An easy start the next day with a 9.30 garden walk with Brian, our guide. He talked about the tropical plants and some of their special characteristics and went on to spot Iguanas is the trees and a green basilisk. As I mentioned this is colloquially known as a Jesus Christ lizard because when scared he will paddle his back legs so fast that it looks like he is walking on water! We also saw a sloth doing what they do best and our favourite, the red eyed tree frog who is really cute and is multi coloured - I will add some pics in due course.
After lunch we went on a boat trip along the ‘canals’ - which are really natural waterways (there is only one actual canal) seeing a number water birds, turtles, macaws, vultures etc.
The next morning we had to wake up early for a 5.30 boat trip. It was lashing it down so that had woken us anyway! Our walk to reception got us mildly moist(!) - I told you we were in the furthest room - but by the time we got going, it had actually stopped and the trip was dry. Wildlife sighted included Tiger heron, snake bird, howler monkeys, osprey, toucans and iguana.
The rest of the day we spent around the pool until the evening jungle walk where we went by boat to an area where there was a walkway through the jungle which took a couple of hours. We spotted (well the guide spotted) bullfrogs, rhino nosed grasshopper, coral snake, army ants (very dangerous).
Back for dinner on our last night.
The next day will see us leave Mawamba for pastures new!
