Andrew and Sheridan's Big Adventure!
It's us again,
Some of you may be aware that we are now in Spain, however our last email finished off in Amsterdam so this is where we will take up our update.
Leaving Amsterdam we headed South through The Netherlands towards Belgium and France. En route we had flying visit to Rotterdam (Netherlands) before setting up camp just inside the border at Breda - beautiful facilitis but arrived too late to make use of them. Managed to sneak in a lovely chicken ceasar for dinner which made up for it.
Next morning crossed the border into Belgium with quick visits to Antwerp and Ghent before crossing into France and spending the night in a farmers paddock just outside of Lille. Awake the next morningto find out that there was no hot water - not the best start to the day, but we were experiencing all different types of showers so not that surprising.
From Lille headed into Paris which proved interesting with their roads, drivers and street signs!!! Ending up missing the ring road and in the centre of town so we started Nadine's bus tour early with a quick visit to Moulin Rouge and Sacre Couer. Andy was getting confirdent in the French traffic (I don't think the girls were as confident thoguh) and wanted to take on the Arc De Triomphe (massive round about with 12 entries and numerous accidents each day - on our last visit we actually just watched the traffic for 15 minutes!) All you married men out there know how this story ends - yes that's right, Andy didn't get his chance to prove his driving prowess. Next time, maybe.
After finding the camp site, checking in and freshening up we hit the town, about 8pm but that's the start of the night in Paris. Thought we would try the Tower in an attempt to catch the sun set, and were pleasantly surprised by the queues. Shez and I decided to avoid the queue and climb the first two levels while Nadine opted for the lift option - something about blisters, she said. did't take too long to climb, even in my thongs (thanks Liss and Steve - they have been worn almost every day). Shez and I timed it beautifully for sun set, even though we took our time around the observation decks. Unforutnaely Nadine was in line and missed most of the sunset but we did eventually manage to meet again at the top. Took heaps of photos, as you do. We even witnessed some loser propose to his finacee at the top - how corny (stupid Texan!!). For some reason lots of girls ended up crying, and you can imagine the rest.
Having missed the last train we braved an adventurous taxi ride home - this maniac accelerated as he entered the Arc De Triomphe and made it no problems - almost as easy I had been telling the girls.
Next day was a bit of a sleep in before leaving Nadine to get the tourist bus around for the afternoon while Shez and I hit the Musee D'Órsay. Still in the middle of a heat wave, we spent about an hour in queue, mainly due to a lady collapsing of heat exhaustation at the entrance which closed everything down. Few hours walking around the Museum before much to our amazement hearing thunderstorms (Andy left the tent open didn't, he!). Braved a run around the block in attempt to find train station, which was only 20 metres from the other exit!!
Finally met up with Nadine before rushing home to get ready for MOULIN ROUGE!!!! Nadine had generously offered to shout us out for a night as a thank you. The show was absolutely amazing, and I am not just talking about the half/fully naked women on display - some of them were even talented!! Different to what we expected too, as the singin and dancing was broken up by a couple of unbelievable circus-types acts, which are too difficult to explain. Thanks again Nadine.
Friday morning, Nadine last day, was spent at the Louvre, what an amazing collection of artworks. In the three hours before Nadine had to return to the van to pack etc, we barely touched the surface. Luckily for Shez and I being a Friday the museum was open until 9:30pm so we were able to return later in the afternoon. When meeting Nadine back at the camp site we had some troubles getting a taxi, but it all sorted out OK in the end. Sad as always to say goodbye, but it was always going the come about. Returning to the city we spent the night in the Louvre before grabbing a quick bite and heading home.
Sat was spent wondering around before visiting the Musee Picasso, which walked us through the life and times of the artist himself. What an interesting character, but very interesting to view his works chronologically. After leaving the musee we headed towrad the Tower again and grabbed some pate, crackers, pasta and of course red wine. Spent our last evening in Paris sitting under the tower and relaxing with our nibbles and wine.
Time to move on - heading South toward Tours we spent a couple of hours walking around the town before sending our first email. Next stop was La Rochelle on the Atlantic Coast. Arriving around 10pm was very pleasant as the harbour was all lit up and the streets were still busy as it was another hot evening. Again walked around for a couple of hours and had a late bite. Contemplated with staying a day or two but decided to head toward Cognac on the way down to Bordeaux. Timed it perfectly as we had 30 min wait before a English tour of Hennessy distillery, follwed by a couple of tastes. Continued on toward Bordeaux in search of a couple of quiet and relaxing days in the wine region.
As I mentioned earleir we are now in Spain but will link Bordeaux into Spain in the next email.
Take care
Lots of love
